『レンブラント400』 来場者数150万人を超える - オランダ

レンブラント、やっぱり大人気！
どうしてそんなに人気なんだろう？！
そう思いますが、ここまで一般的にウケる理由としては
１．セピアっぽい色合いが、しつこくなくってほどよい
２．近所の人っぽい人間の内面の「リアリティ」が感じられる
というあたりが、多くの人にとって「見やすい」「見てて嫌じゃない」絵になってるのかも。
■17世紀
以前も描きましたが、17世紀は芸術の世界ではバロック時代というのにあたります。
カソリック国と、レンブラントの生きたオランダのようなプロテスタントの国の絵は、絵柄が全然違います。カソリックの絵には「自分とは違う世界の人だな」と思わせる王侯貴族が登場しますが、プロテスタントの絵は「なんだか、自分の周りにもいそうな人々」が描かれているので、ほっとします。
宗教画にしても、プロテスタントは基本的に偶像崇拝しないので、大体小さな作品で道徳的な内容を表すことが多いみたいです。
レンブラントの宗教画は、そのへん歩いてるオバサンとかオジサンみたいな雰囲気です。
実際、お嫁さんをモデルにしてたりするので、人間臭い生生しさがあったりします。
■肖像画ばっかり描いてるレンブラント
レンブラントは63歳でなくなりましたが、60点も自画像を描いてます。
多いです。
自画像というのは、注文を受けて描くわけではなく、自分で自発的に描くものです。
パトロンから受注して絵を描いていたレンブラントなのに、どうしてだろう？
という憶測が生まれますが、一般的な解釈としては
「自画像なら、自分の絵であり、いろんな表現が試せる」
という実験的な試みができるから、多く描いたのだろう、と考えられています。
事実、人間の内面を描写する、というレンブラントの特技が、この自画像にも見られます。
■レンブラントの技法
レンブラントは、19世紀後半の画家たちがやったような技法をすでに使っていました。
たとえば、パレットナイフで厚塗りしたり、絵筆の柄で絵の具をこそげとったり。
当時、南の方の画家は、キャンバスの下地に暗い赤色のような色を塗っていました。
でもレンブラントはそのような下地を塗らず、絵の具をこそげとったところは、明るい下地の色が見えて、ハイライトのような効果が出たそうです。
レンブラントの魅力は、水のような薄い重ね塗りの上に、ぽっと厚めの絵の具で
細かい描写が乗せてあるところでしょうか。コントラストが新鮮です。
また、レンブラントといえば、くっきりした明暗。
レンブラントの手紙が7通ほど残っていますが、パトロンに対して「絵はどこそこにかけたら、光線の具合がちょうどいい」と、光のあたり方にとても注意していたそうです。
■不幸な晩年
金持ちの女性と結婚していた若い頃は、羽振りがよかったけど
後半、ビジネスで失敗したとかで、借金苦でした。
でも、そんな苦しい中でも絵のクオリティは高い。
絵に集中するためには、えらい人が訪れてきても、シャットアウトしたりしたそうです。
■トロンプ・ロイユ
さてさて、ひとつマメ知識。
17世紀オランダの絵には上のほうや、両端によく、カーテンとか布が描かれています。
あれ、何だと思います？
当時、絵はまだ貴重品。普段は布をかけていたそうです。
だから、騙し絵的に布が描かれてるんですね。
今度、美術展でそんな絵をみつけたら、その知識を披露してみてください。
