異国の神はキラキラし
【カンダル/カンボジア 12日 AFP】「ヴィサカボチャ（Visakha Bochea、仏陀の日）」と呼ばれる2550回目の仏陀の誕生日を祝うお祭りが12日に開催された。毎年5月の満月の日に祝うこの日は誕生日であると共に、仏陀が悟りを開いた日で、また昇天した日でもある。写真は仏陀の日にカンダル地方のウドン山（Oudong）の周辺を行進するカンボジアの僧侶たち。(c)AFP/TANG CHHIN SOTHY
日本人なら、誰でも、少しばかり疑問に思っていること、それは「東南アジアの仏像は派手」。
■派手な仏さま
どこの寺にいっても、あんなキラキラしたのなんて、見たことない、というのが正直な感想のはず。でも、どうやら日本の仏像でも昔、昔に作られた当時は、それなりに金ぴかだったようです。絵の具の剥げ落ちた痕なども見えますし。
日本書紀だったでしょうか、古い記録にも「異国の神はきらきらし」と、渡来の仏像が金ぴかでキラキラしていて、イイ感じだ、という記述があります。
違いがあるとしたら、それは日本だと「塗りなおさない」というところでしょうか。剥げたら、剥げっ放し。まぁ、その方が味があると感じるためかもしれません。
■どうしてだろう・・・
私のみならず、まあ、誰にとっても、どうしてだろう・・・と思うところです。
どうして、せっかくの仏様なのに、キレイに塗りなおして差し上げないのだろう・・・。専門家たちも、なんらかの説明をつけようと思うみたいですが、特に、コレ、という理由もないようです。
ただ、日本人にとっては、古びた感じや、さびれた感じに、ありがたみを感じる傾向が、あるような気がします。そして、どうも、「昨日作りました、どうぞ！」 という雰囲気の、東南アジア的な派手派手な仏像に、アリガタミを、どうしても、申し訳ないけど、感じられないような、そんなメンタリティがあるようですね。
その感覚の違いは、東京の人が、関西弁で口説かれても、からかわれているようなキモチになるのに、似ているかもしれません・・・
