老夫婦に席を譲って一攫千金 前編

８ですから 「８」 はち・・・。
くたびれたデッキシューズに、からし色のカーディガン。手には折り畳み傘とスーパーのビニール袋を無造作にかかえた老夫婦は、私にそう言った。
何度聞き返しても答えは同じ、
「八ですから・・・はち」
しわしわの手を大きく広げ、もう片方の手の指を三つ合わせて手のゼスチャーでも八をつくり、顔を斜めにしてその手に近づけながら、細く笑う。
こちらも、薄ら笑いを浮かべ、奥にいるおばあさんの方に眼をやると同じ様に手を広げ「八ですから・・・」を繰り返す。
残暑厳しい秋の始まりの９月。
私が西武新宿から電車に乗ると、高田馬場ですぐにその老夫婦はラッシュ時の人の雪崩に巻き込まれながら乗り込んできた。足の悪そうな旦那を気遣う様に老婆は軽く老父の腰に手を回し、その小さい背丈から、つり革に捕まる事すら出来ず、ただ、左へ右へ、前へ後ろへ・・・・電車の揺れに合わせて他の乗客の背中に寄りかかるしかすべが無い様子であった。
「あ、ここどうぞ・・」
すかさず、シルバーシートに座る私は席を譲りに混雑でモミクシャになって少し先にいる老婆に声をかける。
「ああ、す すいませ〜ん。ええんですかい？ 申し訳有りません。」
必要以上に頭を下げられてしまい、逆に恐縮する私。
一人分の席が空いたシルバーシートに何とか人混みをかき分け、ふたりを
たぐり寄せる。
足の悪そうな老父が老婆に誘導されて、びっこをひきながらも何とか先に座る。
老父も私の前を通る時にはやはり眼をつむって深々と頭をさげ、お辞儀をしながら私の前に空けられた席に着く。
私はよく、席を譲る。そして不思議な光景によく遭遇する。
以前にも席を譲って千円を貰った事が有る話をこのブログにも書いた事が有ったが、何かが必ずと言っていい程起きてしまう。別にその「何か」を期待して譲る訳ではもちろん無いのだが、とにかく変な事に出くわすのである。
この時も正にそうだった。
田無に着くと乗客が一気に減り、老父の両隣の席が空いた。
無論、老婆が軽く私に会釈をして老父の左隣へ「よいっしょ」と軽く声を出して安堵の表情で腰をかけた。 車内を見渡すと、立っているのは私の他数名。老夫婦と目が合うと、老父が自分の右隣のシートをトントンと叩き「座れ」と言う。周りに老人がいないのを確認し、遠慮なく座らせてもらう。
しばらくすると、老夫婦が私をじっとみながら、ふたりで何やら相談をしている様子だった。明らかに私の事を話してる様だったが、雑誌を読んで素知らぬ振りをしていると・・・ スーパーマーケットの白いビニール袋から何やら取り出し、
しゃがれた声で「あの・・・すいません・・・・ お兄さん」
老父が私に話しかけ始める。
「はい？」
「あの・・これ・・先ほどのお礼です・・」
老父はそう言ってティッシュに包まれた名刺サイズぐらいのつつみを私の手に重ねる。
「はあ・・」
あったぞあった！過去にもあった！この光景！以前は山手線で同じ様にティッシュにくるまれた千円。不純にもやや期待しながら・・失礼ながら・・重ねられたティッシュの包みを恐る恐る開けてみる。
ななななんと！！！！！！！？？？？！？！？？！？
ごごごご五千円がはいってい〜るじゃ〜ありませんか〜〜〜！！！？？
前回はのっぴきならない事情が有って、終電間際の大勢の前で確かに「席を譲って」千円を貰った。
しかし、流石に今回は、貰う訳にはいかない・・・。
確かに、出費も多かった夏明けで財布は空っぽだ・・これから飲み会だ・・会費五千円だ・・・・いや？でもまてよ・・前回のような大勢の乗客の眼もないし・・。くれるっていうんだし・・・
いやいや・・それにしても五千円はまずいだろ・・・
電車のアナウンスが小平を告げる。車窓に初秋となりすっかり暗くなった夜の町に灯りがゆるい光となって映る。
電車の揺れに合わせて同じリズムで揺れるつり革
依然、私を見て微笑む老夫婦。
どうする？ どうすんのよ！！？ 俺〜〜〜！！？
