薄い蒸気のような機械音で小平に着いた西武線の扉は開く。
行き先の丁度分かれ道となる小平に本川越行きの列車が到着し、乗り継ぎを急ぐ乗客の往来で、車内は一時的に騒がしくはなったが、駅を出発する頃には乗り込んだ乗客はほぼ席に座れ、もとの静かな車両に戻った。
そして相変わらず私の手にはティッシュにくるまれた５千円が握られ、老夫婦は私を細く笑いながら見続けた。
「いえ、やはり頂けません。」
一度は開封した五千円札を丁寧にティッシュに入れ直し、老夫婦に軽く頭を下げながら御返しした。
「・・・・」
席を譲ったお礼と言って、五千円はありえない。
人間として、もらってはいけない。男として受け入れられない。
そう、自分に言い聞かせて御断りした。
「私たち、使い道ほんとうに有りませんから・・・」
返却の申し出になかなか首を立てに振らない老父。
「若い人に使っていただいた方がどんなにこのお金も喜ぶ事か・・・」
目をつむりながら両手の平を左右にふるわせながらオーバーに断る老婆。
「次は〜萩山〜 萩山〜 」
車掌のアナウンスで萩山駅が伝えられる
一向に引かない老夫婦。それでも貰う訳にはいかない。
ふたりが持っていたスーパーの袋にティッシュの五千円を無理矢理入れ込んで席を立ち去ろうとすると
「わかりました・・ほんとうに有り難う・・・」
と言って、今度はあっさり返却を受け入れ、まだ座って・・と言わんばかりに立ち去ろうとする私の手を引っ張り、もとの席に押し戻す。
「おい、あれを出してあげなさい・・・」
嫌に命令口調で老婆に指示を出すと、その老婆はスーパーの袋を中身も見ずにごそごそと何かを探し、奥の方から名刺大の何やら紙を取り出した。
その紙を老父に渡すと、ふたりは満面の笑みを浮かべ、その小さく畳まれた紙を私に先ほどの様に差し出した。
見た目的にはモノクロのコピー用紙のようだったので、とりあえず受け取ってみた。名刺サイズのコピー用紙は蛇腹に丁寧に折られており、広げるとなにやら小さい数字が所狭しと並んでいる。
意味がわからない。
「８ですから・・・はち。」
もう一度、その紙に眼をやる。
数字が規則正しく並び・・・・
あ、カレンダー！？
そう、所狭しと埋められた数字はカレンダー！！
しかも、８年分のカレンダー。
２００５年から２０１３年までの８年分の暦。
五千円の後だっただけに、妙に気になった、その素材と、意味・・・
質感はただのコピー用紙。変わった紙ではない。
親指と人差し指の間にはさみ、双方の指の平で丁寧に質感をもう一度、確かめながら、老夫婦に眼をやると、やはり眼を細くして薄い笑いを浮かべながら
こちらを見続けている。
「何なんですか？これは？」と言いたいのはやまやまだったが、不思議と言葉が出ず、その薄い笑いに釣られて私も笑った。
「ね、おもしろいでしょ。８年分ですよ・・ 」
老婆がそんな私の言葉を察してか言葉を発する
「私たちには、きっと無縁でしょうがね・・・はははは」
老父が話に乗っかり、ふたりしてコトコトコトと眼を合わせるや、笑い出した。
電車は萩山の駅に到着
またまた乾いた音を立て、扉が開いた。
「じゃ、私たちはココで・・ ほんとうにありがとうございました」
席を立ち、私に深々と頭を下げ雨上がりで湿った空気の萩山のホームに老夫婦は降りて行く。
「あ、ちょっと すいません・・・これ・・ 」
ゆっくりと肩を寄せ合い老夫婦はホームの階段のあるほうへゆっくり歩いて行く。その後ろ姿に声をかける私。
私の声が届いたようで、再びこちらを振り返ると
老婆がゆっくりと開いた左手に右手で作った三本の指を合わせ、肩を丸めて、またうっすらと笑みを浮かべる。
声には出さずに口を動かし
「８ですから 八」
そう言った・・・
連結の関係で、普段より長く停まる列車。
ホームの湿った空気が冷房の効いた車内に生温い霧の様に入り込み、私をむ。
小平から乗り合わせた学生の耳にはめられたヘッドホンからシンシンとリズムを刻む音
老婆達は小さくなり、ホームの青白い電灯の光に包まれ消えて行った。
そして私の手には 八年分のカレンダーが残った。
何度も見直す。
何の意味が有ったのだろう？
何の目的で、五千円の後がこのカレンダーだったのだろう？
しかも、例え携帯用だからと言ってこんなに小さい文字では、あの老夫婦に細か過ぎて見るには困難すぎる。
そんな私の心を他所に列車は走り出す。
色んな事を考えながら、あっという間に目的地の東大和に着いた。
降りると直ぐ
あまりに、気持ちが悪い出来事だったので、知合いのH氏に電話を入れる。
H氏とは付き合いも古く、私の身の回りで起きる不思議体験を一緒に居合わせる人物だ。
「あ、Hさん？今さ〜・・・○□△でさ〜」
これらの一件の出来事を一通り話していると、キャッチが入った。
「あ、ごめんHさん、今キャッチ入ったから、またかけ直す！」
私はあわててH氏との電話を切り、後発の電話へ切り替えるが間に合わず。
留守電となる。
しばらくして、留守電を聞き直す。
機械音で留守電へのイントロ
イチバンメノメッセージデス ９ガツ８カ ゴゴハチジハップン イッケンデス ピー
「あ、もしもし○○出版のNですけど・・先日からお支払い遅れておりました印税の件ですが、本日振り込ませてもらいましたので、ご確認ください。因に金額の方ですが、え〜888・・・円になっております。」
ガチャガチャと受話器を切る音
またまた留守電の終了を告げる機械音声
本来、振り込まれるはずの印税が分納の上、八ヶ月間 遅れていた
八時八分 それが突然の電話で振込の連絡。
私は呆然と背中に感じる冷たい物を感じながらホームに立ちすくみ
携帯を持った手をゆっくりとおろした。
「八ですから 八」
レバノンでは空爆と銃声が鳴り響き、今日も尊い命が失われている。
記事では戦争による80歳の老夫婦の死亡の報道。
左手には八年分のきれいに畳まれたカレンダー
これからの八年。いったい何が私に起きるのであろう。
そして世界に何がおきるのであろう？
そして僕は何処へ行けばいいのだろう。
