【メルボルン/オーストラリア 9日 AFP】ギャラリーで働くメアリー・ルー・ジェルバント（Mary Lou Jelbant）は9日、メルボルン（Melbourne）で行われたオーストラリア連邦競技会主催文化祭（the cultural festival of the Commonwealth Games）で、2006年メルボルン祭にも任命されたガーナの日曜大工ワークショップ「パー・ジョー」（Paa Joe）から出展された「サメの棺桶」をチェックする。

もらってはいけない。
でも、くれるっていうし、まいっか。
いやいやそんなつもりじゃない。
いえ、是非どうぞ、私達そんなに長くありませんし
使い道無いですし
親切にしていただいたので、 ホンの気持ちですから。
老夫婦はかたくなに僕に、席を譲ってくれたから・・と
1000円をくれようとするのだ。
妙に混み合い、もみくしゃの夜の山手線。
乗客の視線は私と老夫婦のやりとりの一心に注がれた
新宿で馬場まで乗り込むと、混んでいながらも座れた。
座ったとたんに金太郎のゲロのように人が押し込まれてきた。
座れてよかったとホッとしていると、私の前に老夫婦が喪服姿で
よろよろと立つではないか
人としてここは譲らないわけにはいかない。
「ここどうぞ・・」
ジェントルで紳士的な私
「ああああ〜 すいませんねぇ〜〜 おじいさん このお方が譲ってくださいましたよ〜〜」
ギャルのサマンサタバサのバックに頬を押し込まれながらも
なんとか人をかき分けて老婆のいる私の座席前まで
コマドリアニメーションのように寄ってきた爺さん。
「っああ 」
「よかったね〜 おじいさん。 いいひとだよ ありがとうございます。」
何度も何度も深々と私に礼を言う老夫婦。
「ほんと気になさらないで下さい」
ジェントルな私
新大久保をすぎると、ふたりでぼそぼそとなにやら相談を
している。
あの〜 これ どうぞ ほんと有り難うございました。
差し出されたのはティッシュにくるまれた千円札
当然の事ながら断った。
猛烈にもらえもらえと私に言う。
乗客全員の「もらうんじゃね〜だろうなっ」の冷たい視線
普通であれば、絶対貰わない。貰うわけがない。
しかし、私にはこのとき特別な事情があったのだ・・。
新宿で分かれたモデルのナベちゃんに金がないから貸してくれと言われ、1万円を気っぷよく渡していたのだ。彼を見送り電車に乗り込もうとすると千円しかない。スイカとパスネットで久米川までは何とか帰れる。問題はその先だ。
10時間千円 の激安パーキングを利用した私の10時間のリミットは11時。現時刻から考えると、あきらかに間に合わない。10時間を超えると自動的に30分200円が加算される。つまり今の私の手持ちから考えると、マイナス200円であり、あきらかに足らないのである”このままでは出られなくなってしまうのである！
この千円があれば・・ 私は考える

続く老夫婦の押し売り
・・・・・・「私たちはもう先も無いですし、使い道ないですから・・若い人なら・・」
いえいえもらえないですよ
喪服姿の老婆と私の間をティッシュにくるまれた千円が行き来する。
私と老婆の押し問答に山手線の乗客全員がたたずを呑む。
４回のやりとりの末、私はばあさんから、
千円を受け取った。
山手線で席を譲って葬式帰りのばあさんから千円をもらってしまった。
モラルもあった。常識はわきまえている。
赤い羽の共同募金だってやったし、献血だってした事がある。
当然席譲ったぐらいでお金をもらってはいけなとは思ってる。
しかしもらってしまった。
乗客全員の「もらうんじゃね〜だろうなっ？」の冷たい視線
から、うらめしさと落胆の顔にかわり 車内はいっきにしらけたムードになった。
「ありがとう ありがとう」を老夫婦から何べんも言われ おまけに握手もされ、
私は高田馬場で下車した。電車が動き出してからも人ごみの隙間から私を見つけると深々とお辞儀をされていた。
特別な事情を持つ今回に限り苦渋の選択の末、私は老婆からそのティッシュを受け取った。
11時１０分。久米川駅着
案の定パーキングのリミットには間に合わなかった。
料金所で電気仕掛けの1200円の表示がで赤く薄暗く点滅し
私は財布の中の自分の千円と、老婆からもらったそのティッシュのつつみを開き千円を取り出しその黄色い料金機に二枚のお札を入れ込んだ。
表示金額と導入金額の擦り合わせを無機質に機械が読み取る。
リョウシュウショノヒツヨウナカタハ・・・
５秒もせずにおつりの排出される。
アルミニウムの受け皿と銀色の硬貨のカランカカンという乾いた音が深夜の駐車場にこだまする。
黄色いバーは時計仕掛けのように感情無くカタカタと上に上がり
さ〜出て行けと言わんばかりに間口を開けた。
私は８枚の硬貨を無造作に鷲掴みしてズボンのポケットにほおり込む。
都合８００円の黒字となった私はコンビニでトマトジュースを買う事にした。
コンビニに入ると客はまったくおらず、耳にいっぱいピアスを開けたバイトの兄ちゃんと、秋葉原大好きっといった痩せっぽちの苦学生タイプの２人がかったるそうに、「っしゃいませ〜〜」私の方も見ずにそう言った。
トマトジュース一本を手に取り、レジに行くと店内にいなかったはずの客が何故だか既に会計をピアスの兄ちゃんとやりとりをしていた。
喪服を着た老夫婦。
背中を丸め、香典袋と梅ガムをレジのカウンターに並べて、ごそごそと
喪服の袂から財布を取り出し硬貨をまさぐっていた。
「おじいさん細かいのありませんか？二百円・・」
私は老夫婦の横からそっと手を伸ばし二百円をカウンターに置いた。
老夫婦は驚いた顔をして断ってきたが 私は別のレジで苦学生にトマトジュースを差し出し会計を済ませコンビニを後にした。
バックミラー越しに深々とお辞儀をする老夫婦の姿が見えた。
住宅街の深夜のコンビニの灯りは冷たく路面を照らす。
私のポケットで４枚の銀貨と八枚の銅貨が揺れていた。
「私たちはもう先も無いですし、使い道ないですから・・若い人なら・・」
たどたどと光る街路灯に照らされた小さな狭い路地を走りながら思う
真っ白な空を飛ぶ天使を描いてみた。
彼は、電線をやっと越えられるかと言うくらい非力に飛び、一足の靴を地上に落とす。
空は白く 天使はやっと電線を越えた。
か細い電線を越えたとき 不意に彼の靴は脱げ、
彼のいた街へと 落ちていった
老夫婦は何処へ行くのだろう？
そして僕はどんな棺桶に入るのだろう？
