チェチェン人が強く意識する日本の武士道。その変遷を簡単にたどってきたが、明治維新後の武士道が大問題となる。
■明治で復活するイデオロギー
戦う集団の現実から生まれた武士道は、戦争のない江戸時代に、観念的で道徳的なものに変わっていった。
そして明治維新後、武士道は別の形をとりはじめる。日本は、富国強兵路線を歩むわけだが、その目標にむかって国民なり軍人を動員する精神的支柱が必要になる。それに利用されたのが武士道だ。
江戸時代には主君への忠義が重要視され、維新以後その対象は天皇になった。「死なばもろとも」という戦場における連帯感を帯びた感情から、雲の上にいる天皇のために死ぬというかたちに変形させられたともいえよう。
その時期に出現したのは、新渡戸稲造が著した「ＢＵＳＨＩＤＯ」である。しかし、武士道と名をつけた著作だが、内容は武士道ではない、とすでに述べた。
そこにはキリスト教的倫理観も含まれているし、必ずしも戦士の倫理哲学ではなく、それ以外の戦わない人にも当てはまる道徳を主張している。「武」という文字をけずって「士道」と呼ぶべきものだと私は解釈している。
■武士道から「士道」へ
そのような私の想いに近いと思ったのが、経済史が専門の川勝平太氏の著書『富国有徳論』（中公文庫）である。この本の中で、川勝氏はイギリスのジョン・ラスキンの著書をつぎのように引用している。士農工商でもっとも下位におかれた商に携わるひとに関してである。
「・・・商業は人に説教し、あるいは人を殺す職業以上に、紳士が日々従事する必要のある職業であるということ、そして市場は説教壇とおなじように殉教者をもつことができるし、商業は戦争とおなじように英雄をもつことができるということを世人は発見するであろう」
さらに川勝氏は同書で「士の心をもつ者は、志ある者のことであり、武術の達者な者をさしてはいないのです」と述べている。
過去の伝統を現代に活かして新しい時代を歩むには、上記の川勝氏の著書は、私にとって貴重な参考書である。
■模索する「道」
さて、新渡戸型武士道である。武士道に基盤を置いた古い日本と新しい近代国家の思想のはざまで、両者を融合させた新しい道徳律のことだ。だから武士道ではない。
武士の家（南部藩）に生まれた古い日本人であると同時に、国際人であり自身がキリスト教徒、かつ妻がアメリカ人であった新渡戸は、この書物のなかで、西欧の文学や哲学と武士道を比較し、その調和を図り、新しい思想を模索したい、と言っているように私には思える。
模索する新渡戸の姿勢そのものが大切だと思う。このことが、現代のチェチェンと日本にも重要だと考える。
チェチェン民族哲学のウェズデンゲルは、これまで紹介してきたように、中世の武士道と重なり合うことが多い。長いロシアとの戦いの中ではぐくまれたリアルな倫理体系だ。
実際、チェチェンがロシア帝国に組み込まれ、ロシア10月革命、その後の内戦、ソビエト体制下の生活、民族強制移住、そしてソ連邦崩壊と同時に独立宣言、そのときから始まった現在の戦争・・・。チェチェン人たちは、さまざまな歴史を潜り抜けてきた。
■伝統には新しいものが必要だ
そして21世紀の今、100年も200年も前のウェズデンゲルをそのまま実践するのは無理がある。その伝統精神は受け継ぎながらも新しい方向性を獲得する必要に迫られているのだ。
現実のチェチェンの人たちは、伝統のウェズデンゲルに精神基盤を置きながらも近代的民主主義や人権を、そっくりそのままでないにしろ受け入れている。
そして、ウェズデンゲルは強烈な愛郷主義・パトリオティズムと連動し、数百年にも及ぶ対ロシア抵抗戦争の原動力にもなってきた。
このような精神の具体的なあらわれ（侵略に抵抗する戦士たち）を実際に見てきた私としては、最近日本の国家主義勢力が国民に強制しようとしている“愛国心”について考えざるを得ないのだ。
仮に古い日本をパトリオティズム的なるものとする。反対に富国強兵の明治近代国家をナショナリズムなるものとする。チェチェンとの絡みで、わざわざ新渡戸稲造の著作（ＢＵＳＨＩＤＯ）をとりあげたのは、国家主義=ナショナリズムと素朴なパトリオティズムとどのように折り合いをつけるかを著者の新渡戸が試行錯誤しているように私には思えからなのである。
新渡戸が生きた時代の日本は、実際にどうだったのか。（つづく）
