These images of farce transcend the moral offensiveness of the original Mt. Rushmore sculptures. And, what a relief, eh? For what else do I think of, when I consider Mt. Rushmore and what it means to be an American?

• In North by Northwest, by Alfred Hitchcock, I remember Eva Marie Saint hanging from it. (Is that right?)

• Just today I discovered the sculptures were carved near where Custer had his last stand. The artist was a member of the KKK. Yucko.

In America, most people don't think much about what Mt. Rushmore symbolizes. It's just another national monument. They don't find it strange that four white dead men's faces are carved into nature, and that these men were responsible for the genocide of tribal nations.

These sand sculpture caricatures of the conservative Republican candidates are great art at its finest. Speaking a message much larger than perhaps the artist(s) intended.

Race for vice president?

04年米大統領選候補ケリー氏、オバマ候補支持を表明

That's right. I said, "vice".

Many people think the competition right now is only electing a president. But in fact, in American politics, there are two names on the ballot. When you go into the ballot box to vote for the American president, you vote for the pair.

And this week, we are seeing a prime example of veep positioning.

I'll start with John Kerry. As you may remember, he's the guy who ran for US President in 2004 and lost to George Bush dramatically. I'm guessing he wants to be Obama's vice presidential running mate and that's why he endorsed Obama.

But what about Bill Richardson? Does his neutrality suggest he's the better man? Far from it.

Hilary Clinton cried in public. Does it matter?

Well, Ed Musky in 1972 did destroy his campaign by having water on his face. (So he says.) And well, Hilary Clinton is a female. Perhaps she won't be tough on terror, if she can't be tough in New Hampshire.

The good news is that, in fact, if you watch the BBC footage, you'll notice that she didn't lose control of anything. Certainly not her composure. It was that slimy being-manipulated-feeling I got watching her. That's what gave her away.

So we've learned one thing: Hilary Clinton is a politician.

So, Huckabee is a born again Christian. A Baptist minister. Will this have any effect on American foreign policy?

Well, I admit I'm just now starting to pay attention to the guy. But, a couple thoughts come to mind, just off the top of my head.
