I say to you today, my friends so even though we face the difficulties of today and tommorrow, I still have a dream.
It is a dream deeply rooted in the American Dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of it'screed,"We hold these truths to be self-evident,that all men are created equal".
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia,the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at table of the brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day even the State of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression,will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not judged by the color of there skin but the cotent of their character.
I have a dream today.
I have a dream that one day down in Alabama with vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the word of interposition and nullification.
One day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.
I have a dream today!
I have a dream that one day "every valley shall be exalted, every hills and mountains shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all fresh shall see it together."
This is our hope.
This is the faith that I go back to the South with.
With this faith that we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope.
With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.
With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free ine day!
This will be the day... This will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with new meanig, "My country ,It's of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing: Land where my fathers died ,Land of the pilgrims' pride, from every mountainside, Let freedom ring."
And if America is to be a great nation, this must come true.
So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire.
Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York.
Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies Pennsylvania !
Let freedom ring from snow-capped Rockies of Colorado !
Let freedom ring from curvaceous slopes of California !
Not only that.
Let freedom ring from stone mountain of Georgia !
Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee !
Let freedom ring from every hills and molehills of Mississippi, and from every mountainside !
Let freedom ring and when this happens.
When we allow freeedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will able to speed up teh day when all of God's Children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro Spiritual, " Free at last ! Free at last ! Thank you god Almighty, we are free at last ! "
友よ、私は今日皆さんに申し上げたい。
今日も、明日も我々は多くの困難に直面するでしょう、しかし、私には夢みています。それはアメリカン・ドリームに深く根ざした夢です。
私は夢みています。
いつの日か、この国が立ち上がり、次の信条に本当の意味で基づくような国となることを、「我々は、全ての人間が平等に創造されたという真理を自明のことと考えます」
私は夢みています。
いつの日か、ジョージアの赤い丘の上で、かつて奴隷だった者の子孫たちと、かつて奴隷主だった者の子孫たちとが兄弟愛をもって同じテーブルにつくことができることを。
私は夢みています。
いつの日か、ミシシッピー州のように不正義と抑圧に満ちた州でさえも自由と正義のオアシスに変えられることを。
私は夢みています。
いつの日か、私の幼い子供たちが肌の色によって評価されるのではなく、人間性によって評価されるような国で暮らすことができることを。
私は夢みています。
いつの日か、悪徳に満ちた差別主義者に牛耳られ、連邦の決定に対して「不当な干渉だ」とか「取り消しする」という言葉しか出てこないアラバマ州においても、幼い黒人の少年少女たちが幼い白人の少年少女たちとまるで兄弟姉妹のように手を取り合う日が来ることを。
私は夢見ています！
「いつの日か、すべての谷が高められ、すべての丘と山々は低められ、高低のある土地は平らにされ、いびつな土地は真っ直ぐにされる。こうして、主の栄光があらわれ、人はみなこれを見るであろう」ことを。（旧約聖書イザヤ書４０章４～５）
これが我々の希望なのです。
この信仰を持って、我々は南部に帰るのです。
この信仰があれば、我々は絶望の山から希望の石を切り出す事ができるのです。
この信仰があれば、この国の騒々しい不協和音を美しい兄弟愛の交響曲に変えることができるのです。
この信仰があれば、我々は共に働くことができ、共に祈ることができ、共に闘うことができ、共に監獄に行くこともでき、自由のために立ち上がることもできる。そして、共にいつか自由になれることを知るのです。
その日こそ、神の子供たちは次なる歌を新しい意味を込めて歌うことができるでしょう。”我が国、それは汝のもの、麗しき自由の国。
我汝をたたえる。我が祖先の死したる国、巡礼たちの誇りの国に、すべての山腹から自由の鐘を鳴り響かせよ。
もしアメリカが偉大な国ならば、このことが実現しなければなりません。
だから、自由の鐘を鳴らしましょう、ニュー・ハンプシャーの大きな丘の上から。
自由の鐘を鳴らしましょう、ニュー・ヨークの偉大なる山から。
自由の鐘を鳴らしましょう！高くそびえるペンシルヴァニアのアレゲニー山脈から。
自由の鐘を鳴らしましょう！雪を頂くコロラドのロッキー山脈から。
自由の鐘を鳴らしましょう！カリフォルニアの曲がりくねった坂道から。
それだけではありません。
自由の鐘を鳴らしましょう！ジョージアのストーン・マウンテンから。
自由の鐘を鳴らしましょう！テネシーのルックアウト・マウンテンから。
自由の鐘を鳴らしましょう！ミシシッピーのすべての丘やモグラ塚やすべての山腹から。
我々が自由の鐘を鳴らせば、すべての村々から、すべての集落から、すべての州から、すべての街からも鐘が鳴り響き、神の子となったすべての人々、黒人も白人もユダヤ人も異邦人もプロテスタントもカトリックも、すべての人々がお互いの手を取り合って、あの古い黒人霊歌の中の言葉を口ずさむことのできる日が近づくのです。
”やっと自由に、自由になれました。全能なる神に感謝します。やっと自由になれました！”
