＜F1 第7戦・モナコGP＞アロンソ フリー走行1回目でトップに立つ - モナコ

■ガスコインのつまずき
ジョーダンを一流チームに変貌させ、ルノーがタイトルを狙える位置まで上昇する基盤を築いたガスコインであったが、トヨタでは期待された「ガスコイン効果」が鈍いように見えた｡一つには官僚的なトヨタにあっては「個人」の影響力が全体に波及しにくいということもあるが、ドイツに拠点を置くという地理的なハンデと、ガスコインの手足となって実際に現場でデザインと開発を担う一線のデザイナー／エンジニアを満足に確保できなかったことがガスコインにとっての大きなつまずきであった。
■ガスコインの真骨頂
ガスコインはハッキリ言っている。「自分がチーフデザイナーであったことは一度もない」と。組織上、チーフデザイナー職についたことは何度もあったが、実質的なデザインは有能な部下に任せていた。ジョーダンのチーフデザイナーとなったとき、当時テクニカルディレクターだったジョン・アンダーソンが、ボルト一つデザインしたことがないガスコインに呆れていた｡ガスコインは優秀なエアロダイナミシストであると同時に、優秀なテクニカル・マネージャーであり、自身ではボルト一つデザインできないが、優秀なスタッフから成るデザインチームを指揮してポテンシャルの高いF1マシンを設計するという手腕においては当代随一の能力を持つ、と表現した方がいいかもしれない｡専門化が進み、担当領域の細分化が進む現在のF1デザイン部門を統率するにふさわしい新しいタイプのチーフデザイナー／テクニカルディレクターなのである。メカニックから身を起こし、ボルト一本からF1マシンまでデザインできる「本物のデザイナー」であるアンダーソンから見れば、新人類であったろう。
■ガスコインの側近たち
ガスコインがジョーダンからルノーに移籍したときは、ボブ・ベル、マーク・スミス、ジョン・イリーらが（ガスコインを追って）ルノーに移籍し、ジョーダン時代の「サクセス・チーム」がルノーで再現された。それぞれルノーでテクニカルディレクター補佐、チーフデザイナー、チーフ・エアロダイナミシストに就き、デザインチームの中核を形成した面々である。
加えてルノーには既に、2000年シーズンにコンストラクターズ・ランキングで4位を獲得したB200のデザインチームが技術基盤として存在した｡このチームはティム・デンシャム、クリス・ラダージ、ベン・アガサンジェロウらで、1999年にはホンダF1プロジェクトの中核メンバーであったメンバーであり、その前にはガスコインとティレルで同僚だった面々である｡
■ガスコインの誤算
ガスコインがルノーを離脱する際、主要スタッフに関して引き抜きを行わないという契約をルノーと結んでいた｡一説でルノーの11人のテクニカルスタッフがリストアップされ、各人の契約が満了するまではトヨタへの移籍を認めないというものであったという。およそ1年間はルノーからデザイナー／エンジニアをヘッドハントできなくなり、これで少なくともガスコインはトヨタで2005年用シャシーをデザインする即戦力を失った。
一番の注目はルノー時代にガスコインの部下だった2人のチーフデザイナーの動向であったが、デンシャムはイギリスを離れる気は無いとガスコインに伝えており、スミスは2004年末のルノーとの契約終了時にトヨタからのオファーがあったものの待遇面で折り合わず、（かつてガスコインがそうであったように）野心を満たすために１月だけジョーダンに在籍するという謎の行動をとった後、高額の年俸を提示されて2月にはテクニカル･ディレクター補佐としてRed Bullに加入した（その後すぐテクニカル･ディレクターに昇格した）｡
このようにトヨタにおけるガスコインのテクニカルチームはルノー時代とは大きく異なり、スタートの時点から大きくつまずいていたのである。（その３に続く）。
