【気の進まない出会い】
ぼくが大菅選手と会ったのは、2002年の12月2日だった。
最初、大菅選手はぼくに会うことには気が進まなかったと思う。1週間後に長野でのワールドカップが控えていた。大菅選手はソルトレーク･オリンピックのスタートで失敗をして、メダル獲得ができず、一時はスケートをやめることまで追い詰められ、ようやくその苦難から立ち直りつつあった頃だ。
日本電産サンキョー（当時は三協精機）のスケート部の今村監督がメンタルコーチを探していて、たまたまぼくが今村監督の人脈にかすかにつながっていた。メンタルトレーニングの効果が現れるのに普通なら2年くらいはかかる。1週間後のワールドカップではどうにもならない。そのことを今村監督に承知してもらったうえで会うことになった。
大菅選手から言い出したことではなかったから、「どんなうさんくさいおっさんが現れるのか」と大菅選手は疑心暗鬼だっただろう。
緊張した顔をしてミーティング場所に今村監督とやってきた。ミーティングは2時間くらいだったと思う。最初の３０分くらいは固い表情だったが、だんだんとおだやかになり、ぼくの話も熱心に耳を傾けてくれるようになった。スタートで緊張を解消するメンタル的な方法をいくつか説明した。1週間後のワールドカップで大菅選手は1位になった。もちろんそれはぼくのアドバイスが効いたからではない。
【賢明さへの旅立ち】
1週間後のワールドカップで大菅選手はぼくの教えた方法ではなく、自分で直感的に発見した方法をとった。観客席にいるご両親に手を振ったとたん緊張感がすーっと消えてしまった。自分が愛する人から力をもらうイメージをするとリラックスできるとスポーツ心理学では教えられるが、大菅選手は瞬間的にその場で最適の方法を選択したのである。
ぼくはメンタルコーチやエグゼクティブコーチとしての経験から、人間はメンタル的に強くなるのではなく、自分の弱さと共生できる賢さを身に着けることで成長してくのだと信じている。大菅選手はメンタルワイズネス（こころの賢さ）の旅を、2002年の長野エムウエーブで開始した。
【二束のわらじをはくこと】
周囲の人たちが、大菅選手の成長に気づき始めたのがアテネオリンピックの自転車競技に出場した前後ではないだろうか。「若いときの苦労は買ってでもしろ」という格言は本当だと思う。橋本聖子選手がスピードスケートと自転車競技の両立に大変な苦労をしたのと同様、大菅選手も、アスリートとして人間として大変な苦労をした。
自転車競技とスピードスケートの違いを大菅選手に教えてもらった。自転車はサドルがあるから、自分の体重を自分で支える必要はないが、スケートは自分の両脚で支えなければならない。スケート専門のアスリートは春から夏にかけての半年かけてその筋肉を鍛える。自転車競技をしていてスケートにもどると、自分を支える筋肉をスケートシーズンが始まるまでの短期間で鍛えなおす必要がある。
自転車競技のよさは高速で走りながら精密なバランス感覚を養えることと、スピードへの恐怖を克服できることである。しかし両者がうまくいかないと、スケートに必要な筋肉を失ってしまうばかりか、スピードに対する恐怖感を身に着けてしまう。そのうえ、それまで生きてきたスケート界とは違った文化や慣習の自転車競技の世界に順応しなければならない。 かずかずの試練をうけるうちに、一個人としての「大菅さん」は自分の弱さに気がつき、弱さを受け入れざるを得なかったのではないだろうか。肩の力が抜けて、まわりの人たちに自然に振舞えるようになった。
【学校の優等生から、こころの優等生へ】
大菅さんが小学校時代から高校を卒業するまで、勉強がよくできた生徒だった。生徒会の会長を勤めていたし、ソフトボールでも優れた選手だった。「大菅さんなら一番で当然」と周囲の人たちは期待したし、その期待にこたえようとして、弱音を吐かず、常に優等生である役割を演じながら、大菅さんはツッパッテ生きざるを得なくなったのかもしれない。
「いつも優秀な人間でなければならない」という考えは、心理学の世界では「間違った考え」であり、ネガティブな感情を引き起こす恐れがあるとされている。まじめで誠実な彼女は、自分の「やさしさ」を他人（とくに自分を評価する大人）に表現することまでも封印してしまった。ソルトレーク・オリンピックとそれ以降の試練が、大菅さんを呪縛から解き放った。 メンタルコーチとして生身の大菅さんと接してきたが、一度たりとも彼女の誠実さとやさしさと判断力の正しさを疑ったことはない。日本電産サンキョーのスケート部のキャプテンとして、加藤選手をはじめとする後輩の面倒をよくみている。世界のトップアスリートとして自分のことを考えるだけで精一杯なはずである。健気（けなげ）という古い日本の言葉がぴったりだ。
今後の大菅さんのメンタル的な課題は「ケナゲ」さを感じさせず、空気のような自然さで、大菅さんのすばらしさを周囲に伝えることができるようになることだと思う。
