荒川静香選手ー普通の平常心、オリンピックの平常心
【荒川静香選手の強さ】
何が成功をもたらし、何が原因で失敗したのかを探し出すことは容易ではない。成功にせよ、失敗にせよ、その原因は単一ではなく、いくつかの原因が複雑に絡み合っている。荒川静香選手の金メダル獲得の原因をメンタル面から探ってみても、たった一つの原因に絞り込むことはできないだろう。マスコミのインタビューに対して、荒川選手は「メダルをねらわず、平常心ですべりました」と答えていたが、この平常心という言葉がくせものである。平常心は普段どおりの心の状態、という意味だが、オリンピック大会でメダルを獲得するための平常心は、私たちの日常生活での平常心とはまったく違うものなのである。荒川選手の強さは普段どおりに滑ったことにあるが、その「普段」は大きくわけて二つの部分から成り立っている。まずは前提となる部分で、少なくとも３つの要件を満たしていなければならない。①普段の力が世界最高レベルであること ②最高の力をまぐれではなく、１０回のうち6回以上を出せること ③メダル獲得のために競技生活と日常生活が組み立てられている。この3つの要件をクリアしたうえで、①適度な緊張感を感じつつリラックスしている ②勝つことも、負けることも意識せず、最高の力を発揮するためのイメージに集中している ③無駄な力みがまったくない、という主要部分が満足されなければならない。つまり、オリンピックでメダルがとれる選手の「普段」は非凡なものであり、その非凡さを、過酷なまでにのしかかってくるプレッシャーをはねのけて再現できる心の状態を平常心と呼ぶ。
【平常心をどうすれば獲得できるのか】
メダルを獲得するための平常心はどこから生まれるのだろうか。私は３つの生まれ故郷があると思う。１つ目の生まれ故郷は競技をすることの楽しさである。オリンピックに出場できる選手は小さい頃から、ほかの人に比べてその競技で優れており、賞賛される機会が多い。ほめられれば人間は楽しい気持ちになれる。2つ目は何が何でもやり遂げるという強い意志力である。最初は「メダルをとりたい」くらいの軽い動機だったのが、何度も挑戦しているうちに、だんだんと真剣さが増してきて、不退転の意志に変わっていく。3つ目が苦悩であろう。苦悩を経験することで、ほんとうの自分の姿が見えてくる。ほんとうの自分の姿が見えれば、少々のプレッシャーがかかっても自然体で振舞えるようになる。身体的な能力は非常に幅が広く、卓越した身体能力を持つ超がつく天才的競技者であれば、1回目のオリンピック出場でメダル獲得することもできるが、多くの選手は一度はオリンピックで挫折体験を持っている。荒川選手のほんとうのすばらしさは、金メダルをとったことにあるのではなく、たいていの人なら2度と立ち上がれないような挫折を乗り越えたことにある。
【苦悩こそが人間を成長させる】
私がメンタルコーチを務めた日本電産サンキョーの4人の選手たちは、トリノオリンピックでメダルを取れなかった。取れなかった責任は私にもある。しかし、彼らが人間として、アスリートをしてさらに成長するために、荒川選手から多くを学んでほしい。そして辻邦生「背教者ユリアヌス」のすばらしい一節「苦悩こそが人間を成長させる」という言葉を、4年後のバンクーバー・オリンピックで実証してほしいと願っている。
