舞妓さんたちにはちょっとお化けっぽい綺麗さがある。日本のお化けは、儚げで可憐な女性が多い。かといって、本当にお化けなどいるのだろうか？ そんなことは夏になると、忘れていたものを思い出すかのように話題にのぼるものだが、実際には見える人と見えない人がいるという。かくいう私は、信じるも信じないも、幽霊らしきものを見たことがあるもののひとりだ。

時はくだって・・・ 私は物心ついたときから、お化けらしきものを何度か見たことがある。かといってそれらは背筋が凍るほど恐怖心でぞくぞくする、というものでもない。しかし実際にあった話であるので、特に記憶に残っている３つの体験「怪」談を紹介する。
その前にこの怪談の舞台となったアパートの背景を説明しておこう。私は千葉県内の高校を卒業後、神奈川県に一人暮らしを始めた。生まれてはじめて親元を離れて暮らす小さなアパートの一人暮らし。気ままではあったが、なんとなく物悲しい気分になったものである。
そのアパートは、米軍住宅の敷地のすぐ裏、表通りからちょっと奥詰まったところにあった。平凡な白い壁の２階建て木造アパートで、１階の中央の一部屋を借りた。部屋にははしごをのぼってあがれるロフトが一つあり、そこに布団をしいて寝る。１階のロフトは異常に天井が近く、仰向けになると天井がさしせまってきて、極めて圧迫感のある状態であった。

さて、梅雨時期。エアコンはついていたが、どうしても寝苦しい夜だった。夜中、ふと異常に腹に重いもの、なにか大きな石のかたまりにずっしりとよりかかられているような感覚に襲われてはっと目が覚めた。妙だなと思い、腹のほうに目を向けようとすると、今度は「金縛り」にあった。
金縛りであるから、当然身動きが取れない。やがてどこからか「ギャー、ギャー」というけたたましい声が耳に響いてきた。その音は遠くにも近くにも感じられたが、どうやら腹の上に重さを感じるところから聞こえてくるようだった。そのとき仰向けに寝ていたので、目だけをかろうじて腹の上にやることができた。そこには・・・・
１歳にも満たないらしき赤ん坊が、白い着物のような産着を着て私の腹の上に、四つんばいになりながらのっかっているのをみつけ、私はぎょっとした。それを見て叫ぼうとしたが、声が出ない。赤ちゃんは二つの小さなこぶしのような手でむんずと私の腹をつかみながらギャーギャー泣き続けている。私はわけがわからず、こちらも負けじと声を出そうとした。
ただ泣きじゃくる声と、私の意思はしばらく対話なく競り合った。私が金縛りをようやくふりほどいてようやく「キャーッ！」と声を上げるやいなや、その赤ちゃんの姿は消えた。翌朝、ずいぶん悪夢をみたな・・・と思いながら服を着替えているとき、腹部に小さなあざがのこっていたのをみつけ、青ざめた。
そんな出来事があってからしばらくして、近くに住む地元の人に聞いた話では、その昔、このあたりで１歳前に死んでしまった赤ん坊がいて、よくその幽霊が現れるのだということであった。近くに弔いの墓もあるという。こわいものみたさで、私はその墓を見に行くことにした。アパートは直角の曲がり角を伴う袋小路のような場所にあったが、その直角の反対側つまり建物の裏側、まさに米軍住宅を取り囲む塀沿いに、松の並木道があり、そのうちの一本の木に隠れるようにして、小さな墓石を見つけた。なぜこんなところにあるのかとも思ったが、誰かが世話をしているのか、生花が咲いていた。私はそこにしばらくたたずみ、手を合わせて冥福を祈った。

それ以後赤ちゃんがおなかに四つんばいになってあらわれることはなかったが、夏休みも近くなったころ、ふたたび毎晩のように金縛りにあうようになった。ついにその金縛りから開放されるべく、対策を練り始めた。さては家の角度や風水がまずいのかもしれないと知恵をしぼり、今度はロフトの上でふとんの角度を大々的に変えてみた。
夜、角度を変えてセッティングしたふとんにおそるおそる横たわる。幾分、視界がかわって気分もいい感じがする。そして眠りに落ちた・・・。
夜中。私はなにか妙な物音で目を覚ました。じわじわと、ある物音が頭先の方向から響き渡り、それが耳元に近づいてきているのを感じた。「ジャッ、ジャッ、ジャッ、ジャッ・・・・・」。誰か・・・しかもかなり大勢の人たちが、ジャリ道の上を後進しているような音のようだった。その音はますます私の顔もとに近くなる。そのときすでに私の体は金縛りに固まってしまっていた。さらに確かに布団に寝ているのだが、一方でジャリ道の上に吸い込まれるように横たわっている異次元的な感覚におそわれた。
正夢か幻覚か・・・・私が見たものは。兵卒の団体だった。カーキ色の制服を着た兵士の一隊が、列をなしてジャリ道を行進しているのである。目的地がどこなのかはまったくわからない。彼らは私が寝そべっているを気づかずに横を通り過ぎていく。だがそのうちの誰かひとりだけが、なぜか私のほうに足を向けてきた。そして私の顔を覗き込んだ。兵隊の帽子をかぶった、日焼けした、頑丈な印象の顔立ちをした20代半ばくらいの青年だった。その顔は太い眉毛にうつろな一重の目をたたえ、無表情にかがみこんで、私の顔を、両の手で「見るな」といわんばかりに覆い隠した。
それはほんの数秒だった。その行列の音がやがて遠くなっていくと、私の顔を覆い隠した青年は行進に戻り、やがて彼ら全員が、遠くなりゆく音とともに姿を消した。私は金縛りがとけるとともに冷や汗がどっと出ているのをおさえきれず、ただ疲れきってそのまま眠りに落ちた。
翌朝、頬のあたりに誰かに顔をつかまれたような奇妙なあざが残っていた。ひょっとしたら、ふとんの角度をかえたことでさんずの川に頭をつっこんでしまったのかもしれないなどと冷や汗をかいた。なお近くにある米軍住宅の敷地はかつては日本軍の所領であり、そこから多くの日本兵隊たちが戦争に出征していったという。

成人式をひかえたころ。夜中にふと私を呼ぶ声がして、目を覚ました。みると、ロフトのはしごの入り口のあたりに私の祖母がいた。「げんきかい？」・・・祖母は手を差し伸べた。私は夢だと思って、返事をした。「おばあちゃん、久しぶりだね」。眠気眼で自分の手も差し伸べた。すると、祖母の手は、私をひっぱってふとんから起こそうとする。でもそのままひきずられたらロフトから落ちてしまう。私は「おばあちゃん、おっこっちゃうよぉ・・・」。祖母はなにもいわない。ただしばらく、私の手を引っ張った気配をみせ無言だった。そのまま、私は祖母の手をとり、童心にかえったように眠りに落ちた。祖母もそのまま夢のかなたへ消えていったように思えた。翌朝、実家から電話があった。祖母が息をひきとったとのことであった。
この三つの話はすべて実話である。いま思い出すと夢のように感じられる。なぜだろう。私はいつのころからか、こうした幽霊的な体験を恐ろしいと思わなくなっていった。いつのころからか、こうしたことにあっても怖いと思うのを意識的にやめてしまったのだ。
すると不思議に、金縛りはこなくなった。悪夢はときどきみるが、重さや音を伴う感覚はもうない。祖母の手は、磁石のように私をひっぱった。道ずれにできればしたいとでも思ったのだろうか。多分、最後のお別れをいいにきたけれども、孫娘の顔を見て急にこの世に名残惜しさを感じたのかもしれない。祖母が逝った年、相次いで祖父も他界した。私はその年に成人式を迎えた。後、いくつかの家に移り住んでいるけれど、こうした経験に一度もあったことがない。

夏ともなると、表題のような怖い話、不可思議な精神界の話が賑わう。
一つだけ、ちびのころの話をご紹介しよう。
昔々、といっても昭和の２０年代、よく夏になると
田舎に遊びに行った。祖母が信心深い人だったが、縁側に
すわっていろんな話をしてくれる。息子が二人、戦場に行った。
ある日、夕方、こうして縁側ですずんでいるとき、すーッと
自分の頬をかすめるように何やら冷たきものが、流れて
消えていった。そのとき、戦場での息子の死を直感した。
それから、２－３週経ってから、また、縁側で息子の
死に思いをいたしていたら、また、同じような冷気が
すーッと顔をよぎった。祖母はまた、もう一人の息子の
死を感じ取った。奇しくも、息子二人の死亡通知は縁側での
それぞれの冷気体験の翌日であった。人間には、科学の力では推し量れない精神界の神秘と奥深さと不可思議さ、一言でいえば、「霊」の世界と密着している何かがあることだけは確かである。
話は飛ぶが、幽霊の形も世界各国様々だと思う。
日本の幽霊は多くが”うらめしやー”といって、
首から下の位置で両手を持ち上げるようにして、
しかし、手先は下方に向けて姿を現す。手の位置が
あまり下の方では幽霊らしくないし、ましてや、頭の
てっぺんあたりから手を出すような形は美的では
鳴く幽霊らしくない。（幽霊自身はどう思っているか
しらないけれど・・・・）
一方、「夏夜奇譚」書き手の本拠地ＵＫのお化け
はおよそ日本のそれとは異なる。ハムレットに
でてくる亡霊が日本のお岩さんの風情では
様にならない。ふわふわとした怪しげな足取りでは
あるが、シェークスピアの亡霊は大地に（？）確かに
足をついている。
この辺のお化けと亡霊の姿形、容姿等について、
ひまがあったら調べてみてください。夏の夜の
余興に。
それにしても、臨場感のあるこわい「夏夜奇譚」
おもしろく拝読しました。もっとも、実地に体験した
あなたさまの当時の心境からすれば、”おもしろい”
などと悠長なことを言ってはしかられるかも知れ
ませんが・・・・。

おばあさまの、「直感する」こと
これが多分何かのヒントになっていそうです。
思い込みや偶然ではなく
必然的に直感してしまうのでしょうね。そしてそれは
どうしても避けられない事実がおこったことを示している。
美しく悲しいエピソードです。
イギリスも、お化けの話は沢山あります。
数え切れないほど。特に築年が長い建物が
多いだけに、より現実的なかんじがします。
先日訪問したお屋敷には、伝統的に高い壁に
囲まれた庭があり、そこでよく人の声がするとか。
そして、ときどきなにかで遊んでいたりするとか。
それは昔、その屋敷で死んだ人の霊だとか・・・・
「遊んでいる」という無邪気さが余計にこわいですね。
なにかおもしろい話があったら、またレポートします。
