なんと嬉々とした「女性実業家」の表情だろう。それに対し、サポートする男性側の必死の様相ときたら。宇宙旅行の訓練は、世界を通してみても氷山の一角にしかならないが、アンサリさんと同じ昨今のアメリカのカノジョたちの好みは、一昔前とちょっと変わってきているらしい。

アメリカのマーケット調査会社ＴＲＵがおこなった調査によると、アメリカの女性４人のうち３人は、ダイヤのネックレスより新型プラズマテレビを選ぶとの結果が出たそうだ。一人あたりの電子機器の平均保有数は、男性が6.9個、女性は平均6.6個とのこと。アメリカのカノジョたちが平均して電子機器を6．6個持っているということなので、私自身、日本のカノジョのひとりとして実際にいくつ持っているのか数えてみた。

ＩＣレコーダー×1
５個である。これに固定された家があったとしたら、テレビ、ＤＶＤプレイヤー、デジタルオーディオ機器などがはいってくるはずだ。とすると6.6個は驚くに当たらない。
また4人に3人はダイヤのネックレスより新しいプラズマテレビを、半数以上がフロリダ旅行よりもプラズマテレビを、そして９割近くがブランド靴よりもデジタルビデオカメラがほしいと答えたという。
こうしたリサーチ結果がちょっとした話題を呼んでいるのは、これまで電子機器は男性のもので、女性はファッションや食べ物に興味がある、という一般的イメージをくつがえすような結果だったからということである。
女性が機械オンチでファッションとグルメにしか目がないとは失礼な、と反論の声をあげている方もいるかもしれない。けれども、女性は本来メカオンチなのではなく、これまで歴史・社会的にメカオンチにならざるを得なかった境遇を経験している。社会に温存されていたころに急激に発展してしまった機械そのものへのとっつきにくさが、女性を少々メカオンチにしてきてしまった背景は否定できない。

最近、イギリスの地域産業の歴史を飾る美術館に足を運んだ。そこでは産業革命のころから戦前くらいまでの古式ゆかしい産業機械たちがディスプレイされていた。巨大な産業用機織機や工業ミシン、原始的なプレス機から消防車、スティームエンジンまで、さまざまな機械が並び、どれも現代のものよりもふたまわりも大降りで、ごつごつと不器用なまでに機械の肌が丸出しである。ハンドルやボタンなども渾身の力をこめて扱わないと発動しないような仕様であった。
「渾身の力をこめて」と書いたけれど、これは一般的な体格の女性からすると、ということである。原始的な機械の類は大抵、生物学的に男性に比べて力が弱い女性に親切なデザインとはいいがたい。どれも女性よりも力のある男性こそ上手に扱えるというものとみうけられる。（もちろん例外もあろうが）。
機械は「男性的なデザイン」のものからはじまっていて、それも大抵、油だとか石炭といった身の回りを汚すもの、危険なもの、におうもの、そして重いものが多かった。発動やメンテナンスに必要とする大切なものであったにしろ、先天的に滑らかで出心地よく、愛らしいものが好きな傾向がある一般的な女性の好みに相反している。

やがて、20世紀ともなれば機械もだんだん一般家庭にも普及するようになり、やれ三種の神器は女性の社会進出に役立つ・・・そんな風にいわれているうちに、近年メカの類は恐るべき速さで小型化し、スマートになり、使いかっても簡便化されてきた。女性が社会進出して一定の収入を保つようになったのはもちろんだが、要は、メカの仕様やデザインそのものが一昔前より女性にとって「おちかづき」になりやすくなってきたことも、女性をメカに「とっつきやすく」させている要因となっている。軽く、ハンディサイズで清潔感があり、しゃれたカワイらしいボタンがついていて、臭くなく、汚れないという理由はそれを語るのに十分である。
自分磨きをしたい昨今のカノジョたちは、自分の手を汚さず、かつ自由に、身の回りをよりよく便利にしたい。リラックスして、美しくなり、充足したい。世界的にヨガが流行しているのと似たような香りがないこともないし、無意識にも、女性独特の虚栄心がしっかりと根付いているのを感じ取れる。こうしたライフスタイル自体がいまのところ「実用を兼ねたファッション」といわれてもなんらおかしくない。ただし近代文明の進歩を静かに皮肉ったムッシュー・ユロの映画のようなエスプリをきかすまでにはあまりに物資情報が混沌としている。
カノジョのカレシは、もうすでにプレゼントとしてシャネルの財布よりもＩＣカード、ティファニーのペンダントよりもＰＣのメガバイツ容量が問われるようになってきているのだろうか。やがてアンサリさんのような果敢なるラッキー・ウーマンの存在がノスタルジックに語られるころには、「すべて見せます！ セレブの愛する美形ロボットたち」だとか、「シーズン到来！ ゼッタイに失敗しない 肌荒れ知らずの宇宙観光旅行術」といったトピックが女性メディアを飾るようになるのかもしれない。そんなに遠くはない未来の話にも聞こえる。はて、そんなに急いでどこにいくの？と感じないわけではないが、こうした流れは当面誰にもとめられるものではなさそうである。

女性の変化、従来の関心事から他のものに
対する関心の移動。徐々にそうなっていくもの、
急激な変貌をとげていくもの。流行もいままでの
様子とはずいぶん異なる分野での広がり、ひつの
ユニークな社会現象を観察するといろんなことが
見えてきますね。その変化のなかには、あまり
歓迎すべきでないものも含まれるようにみえますが、
それが本物である場合は、深く深く、予想を超える
スピードで社会に浸透し、あっという間に一つの
文化を形成する。
今から体力を鍛えにゴルフに出かけます。
今回の課題については、後刻、ゴルフが
終わったあとでもう少々私の意見をのべさせて
頂くつもりです。

いつもご覧いただき、ありがとうございます。
本文中、フランスのムッシュー・ユロの映画について
触れました。
まだご覧になっていない方のために、
ユロさんのお話を念のため付け加えておきます。
ユロさんは、フランスのジャック・タチ監督・出演の
コメディ映画「ぼくの伯父さん」「ぼくのおじさんの休暇」の
メインキャラクターです。
「ぼくの伯父さん」の中で、ムッシュー・ユロを慕う男の子の
両親、特にお母さん（ユロさんの妹）は、
当時としてはたいそう「近代化」された、
フルオートマティックの家に誇らしげに住んでいます。
庭のゲートをあけるのも、料理をするのも、
すべてオートマ。しかしオートマとはいえ
わざわざドアをあけるために一度や二度以上
作業を要してボタンをおすなどのセッティングを
周到にしなければならないので、
オートマをオートマたらしめるまでにやたらとクッションがあります。
ユロさんと甥っ子、それにその家族の話を通して
「ハイテク崇拝ぶり」を皮肉り、くすくすと笑いそそるという
フレンチ・エスプリです。

アンサリさんが人間史上初の女性旅行者として、
宇宙に「観光」をしに出かけましたね。
本日、無事帰還のニュースを目にしました。
宇宙飛行士は半年宇宙に逗留とのこと
はて、普通の飛行機旅行でも数時間のるだけで
体力的にキツイことがあるのに、
宇宙に半年とはどういうことか、
想像するのがちょっと難しいです。
宇宙飛行士は夢にあふれてステキだな、
宇宙旅行もいずれ多くのひとがするようになるのかも、
と思う反面、これまで地球に生きてきた人間が
宇宙滞在から受ける身体・精神的影響はどれほどの
ものなのかと心配になります。現に、科学者は
過去宇宙に出かけた飛行士に、身体及び精神的な
疾患を発見しているというニュースをイギリスで
耳にしたことがあります。これからどんどん研究が
すすんでいくことでしょうが、両手放しに
「宇宙旅行」＝「よいもの」「フロンティア精神」と
ポジティブに考えるにはまだ時期尚早かなとも
感じます。
そもそも宇宙に人間がいって、旗をたてれば
そこがその国のヒトのものになるというのは
ヒトが勝手に考えたものでしょう。
宇宙にいったら人間もまた違ったように
予期せぬ進化をとげてしまうのかもしれませんね。
