ありがとう十国十色

外国語学習でもっともはじめに習うのが、自己紹介と挨拶の言葉だ。そして外国に行くときに、はじめて身近に言葉をかわす外国人は、チケットカウンターのレセプショニストやフライトアテンダントだろう。外国語を話せなくとも、挨拶さえしっかりしていれば、案外楽しく笑顔のやりとりができる。そうはいっても、実際にみてみると、日本人は案外「ありがとう」の言葉を使うことが少ないような印象を受ける。礼節を重んじる日本で、形式的には煩雑な礼の場面に多く遭遇するのだが、とりわけサービス業や販売業にあっては「お客様は神様だ」の精神が一つの哲学・文化として根付いているため、礼の形も大きくかわってくる。

飛行機に乗っていると、すべてではないにしろ案外沢山の日本人が、アテンダントに「ありがとう」と言っていないことに気づく。「どちらがお好みですか？」と聞かれ、「あ、これ」と返事。そして飲み物や機内食をわたされて、そのまま、という場面にこれまで何度も見てきた。もちろんこれは人にもよるのだが、けっこう「そうして、そうされて当たり前」というやや横柄な態度をとり、客にしてみればサービスはしてもらって当然という風潮が垣間見られる。
こうしたことは単一民族国家の不文律の中で育まれたことだから、日本文化の中であればそれほど問題はない。しかし外国に行くとちょっと事情がかわる。飛行機の中は、違う「ありがとう」文化の扉をあけるときといってもいい。

世界のホテルを渡り歩くあるく日本人ホテルマンに取材したとき、「日本人は世界きってのわがままな客が多い」という話をされていた。言葉をかえれば、世間知らずともいえる。ヨーロッパのある一等地にたつ日系ホテルにツアーでやってきた、ある地方ではその名の知れた高齢の日本人が、外国人サービススタッフから日本同様のサービスをされなかったために立腹して、宿泊代をかえせ、謝罪しろ、「頭をたれてくれなければ」腹の虫がおさまらん！と強くでてきた。この癇癪はどうにもとまらず、ホテルのＧＭはわざわざ海外から日本にまで飛び、日本式にのっとって頭をたれ、丁重な侘びと謝罪の品を差し上げて、ようやく話はおさまったという。
個人主義がすすんでいる欧米や、社会主義国の中国などのサービススタッフたちに、日本人と同じような「お客さまは神様だ」の精神を受け継ぐサービス感覚や、天性のきめこまかさ、企業への忠誠心を期待することは非常に難しいというのはけっこう有名な話。これはアテンダントやホテリエに限らず、外資系あるいは世界を舞台に活躍し、外国人を部下に持つ日本人マネジャーやエグゼクティブクラスの悩みの種のひとつでもあるという。

さて、海外でコミュニケーションをとるために大活躍する英語。はじめに触れたとおり、言語はかわってもお国の習慣やメンタリティをそのまま無意識に持ち込んで、店員やアテンダントに「サンキュー」、「プリーズ」といわない日本人をよくみかける。日ごろ礼節を重んじる日本人としては意外な一面でもある。
英語圏やヨーロッパ言語圏ではとくに、ことあるごとに「サンキュー」と「プリーズ」（フランス語なら「メルシー・ボークー」と「シルヴプレ」、スペイン語なら「グラシアス」と「ポルファボール」）を使う。それらをつけるのとつけないのとでは、丁寧度が格段に違い、使わないと、公共ではぶっきらぼうで失礼な感じを受ける。
かくいう私も、海外に頻繁に足を運ぶようになってからというもの、あまりに自分自身が「サンキュー」や「プリーズ」と、いうべき場でタイムリーにいえないことにちょっとした居心地の悪さ、ぎこちなさを覚えた者のひとりである。礼を言いたい気持ちがないわけではない。が、「ありがとう」という簡単な礼の言葉のかわりに、複雑な言い回しで礼をする日本的習慣を身につけており、英語をなんとか話す程度であった当初の私には、簡単に「サンキュー」というべき場、あるいは「サンキュー」だけですましてしまう場の多さに、ちょっと奇異な感じを受けたのも無理はないし、どのタイミングとシチュエーションでそれを「多用」するべきなのかも、いまひとつつかめなかった。
すべてとはいわないが、海外の公共・ホスピタリティサービスには落胆させられる場合は多い。不本意にも、店員や乗務員のほうがとりすました態度で「私の持ち場じゃないのでそんなことを言われても困ります」「時間外ですのでそんな質問はなさらないでください」といった無責任な態度をとることも、けっこうある。（これはとりわけイギリスで顕著である）。
サービスとしては非常によろしくないのは明らかだが、これにいちいち腹をたててはきりがないということも学んだ。どんなことがあってもこちら側が（たとえあきらめ気分でも）「サンキュー」である。この発展型で、逆にちょっと押し付けがましく、「じゃ、よろしく」「とにかくたのみますよ」という期待をこめた依頼、ダメ押しの責任転嫁の意味でサンキューを活用しているイギリス人が多いことも、いいのかわるいのか学んだ気がする。
あるイギリス人に、「とにかく皆さん、サンキューを欠かさないですね」というと、「まぁ、丁寧といえば丁寧なんだけど、つまり習慣なんですよね。日本人のお辞儀みたいなものでしょう。これは儀礼的なもので、本心からいっていない場合も多いんです」と苦笑していた。つまり、「サンキュー」発言も社会全体に浸透している条件反射みたいなものということらしい。まぁお礼を言うのと言わないのとでは、言ったほうがいいのにかわりはない。
とにかく以前にくらべれば私の英語も多少上達して、「サンキュー」と適当な場面で言えるようになった。しかし、あくまでも形式的に、義務的に「サンキュー」といわねばならない場面に遭遇すると、できるだけ正直に暮らしたい私の脳裏にはちょっとしたストレスがよぎらないでもない。できるだけ、「本当にありがたい」とおもえる状態で、その場面でスマートにお礼の言葉をいいたいものである。

外国語で「ありがとう」というお礼の言葉をいくつ思い浮かべられるだろう。外国にいったり、外国人と話をしたりするとき、外国だからという理由だけで公用語の「サンキュー」で済ましてしまうにはあまりにも味気ない。行った先では必ずその国のお礼の言葉を話したいとは思うものの、つい「サンキュー」といってしまいがちだ。
韓国に滞在中、「おはようございます」を意味する「アンニョンハセヨ」はいえたのに、「ありがとうございます」を意味する「カムサハムニダ」がどうしても口から出ずに、「サンキュー」で通してしまった。結局帰国直前の空港で、韓国のりの味や値段について英語で質問をしながら、最後にようやく「カムサハムニダ」ということができた。すると店員さんは嬉しそうに、「カムサハムニダ」と笑顔で対応してくれた。
その瞬間、その韓国美女の表情に、自然な安堵感のようなものが広がった。些細なことではあったけれど、私は「あぁ、やっぱりその国の言葉で話すのが一番だな」とあらためて感じた。玉露のお湯は煮えたぎるほど熱くないほうがいいのと一緒で、その国にあった適温の、スマートな挨拶ができることが、新しいコミュニケーションを発展させ、相互理解を深める潤滑油にもなる。もちろん、母国においても感謝の気持ちと「ありがとう」の言葉を忘れずに過ごすのがまず基本中の基本であるのだが。

サンキューを多用する国のひとが
日本にやってくると、とにかく丁寧に、どんなときも
「ありがとうございます」といっているのを
よく見かけます。
レストランの店員さんに、外国人客についての
話を聞いていて、多くのスタッフが
「皆さんとても親切にありがとう、と声をかけてくれる。
するとこちらももっとよりよいサービスがしたい
と思える」という話をしていました。

旅先のニューヨークで以前歩いているおばあさんに
道を尋ねた。親切に応えてくれた。とてもよく分かったので”サンキュー”のことばが自然に出てくる。おばあさんはにこっと
わらって、”Enjoy the city!"。なんともいえないスマートさだ。これが、東京だったらどうだろう。十中八九、こうしたスマートな
やりとりにはならないだろう。
サンキューということば一つとっても、その国の
洗練度、会話力の妙味、言葉を発するひとのアウトゴーイングな姿勢といったものがよく表れる。いわば国とひととの教養のレベルがはっきりと出てしまう。
日常生活において、アウトゴーイングな訓練が必要となる。
特に国際化といわれる昨今ではなおさらであろう。
コストのなかにサービス料が込められているといった問題
ではない。自然に”ありがとう”ということばが、その国のことばで、口から出てくること、加えて、さわやかな微笑みがあれば、これは最高。日本人はこの面では概して不合格。国際的尺度からすれば、失格。文化度、洗練度、教養が低いという評価になる。
”感じのよさ”を常に表すことのできるような社会全般の
雰囲気を作り出す工夫が必要となる。教育も大事だろう。
「先生」といわれる人たちは、概して威張って、ひとに
お礼をすなおに言わないひとも多く見受けられる。
学校の先生がたも、”サンキュー”のもつ心地よい響きや
やさしさや洗練された雰囲気のもつ意味をいわば一つの徳目として生徒によく教えることも必要である。もちろん家庭においても。
海外旅行者がますます増えてきたのはとても良いことだ。
しかし、傍若無人の旅行者のふるまい、品のないことば、話題
等々、日本人の品格を落としている旅行者も多い。
最低限のマナーを身につけることが必要だ。
さもないと、いつまでも文化三等国のレッテルをはられたままに終わるだろう。
ニューヨークでのおばあさんの”Enjoy the city!"の言葉のなかに、そのひとのやさしさ、スマートさ、教養を改めて思い浮かべる次第です。

日本人が親切で丁寧あるのは、
世界からもよくいわれることです。
国内旅行をすると、旅先でとてもやさしく、
思い出に残る人々に沢山であうことができます。
でもはにかみやでもあるため
外国人に対しては特にスマートに表現がしにくいのでしょうね。
もちろん、日本ならではのよさ、日本風の表現を
知って理解してもらうこともまた、
受け入れ側としては大切な仕事となってくるとおもいます。
日本人は基本的には丁寧で感じのよい方が数多くいます。
でも、外に出てしまうと不思議に気が大きくなるのか、
極めて疑問な態度をとり続ける人々もなきにしもあらずのように見受けられます。
このギャップ・・・けっこう唖然とすることすらありますが
それだけ、日本人が精神的・文化的に多面性を含んでおり、
常識も一定なようで一定出ない証拠なのかもしれません。
もちろんこれは語学力の問題でもありますよね。
外国語をスムーズに使うには、ある程度海外スタンダードに
あわせて使う必要がでてきます。
諸外国の真似をしたりする必要はないとおもいますが
せめて、ちょっとした場面で挨拶とともに
「プリーズ」と「サンキュー」も、意識的にでも使用すると
もっと感じがよくなるのではないかなと思っています。
基本中の基本ではあるのですけれどね。
