ソファで孤食を
欧州最大のゲームの祭典「GC 2006」 開幕に先駆けプレス公開 - ドイツ

ドイツのゲーム関係の写真であるのについ、ソファのことを連想してしまった。なぜソファなのかというと、私がよく行き来している英国では、ソファをこよなく愛している人がとみに多いからである。英国の家庭には「食卓」というものがあまり中心におかれていない。すべてではないのだが、見たところ日本にくらべ多くの比率で、ダイニングテーブルは主役の座を逸している。なかには一台も食卓をおいていない家もある。テーブルをあえて大々的に「出してきて」使うとしたら、大抵家族の集まりだとかお祝いのとき、そしてクリスマスのときくらいというのも、珍しい話ではないそうだ。そこでテーブルのかわりに、中心となってくるのがソファなのである。ソファだけのＴＶＣＭも目立ち、ソファ専門のデパートも盛況。と、ここまでは「お国変われば」「外国らしい」という印象である。

しかしこのソファ、例えばはじめに子供、次にお母さん、次にお父さんが、別々になって食事を取る場にもなりえるとなると、ちょっと考えてしまう。食卓なしに英国人はどうやって食事をとるのか――。ソファに腰掛けて皿を膝の上に置き、ひとりひとりが別の時間に食事をとるのである。そこでテレビを観賞したり、ゲームで遊んだりなどして、一皿にもられた料理あるいは彼らの大好きなサンドイッチやチップス（フライドポテト）、バーガーの類をつまみ食いする。ミールズ・オン・デマンドといったところである。中にはソファの前において食事をとりやすくする、一人用のマルチテーブルなるものが売られているのだから、ソファは食卓ならぬ食座となっているのだ。

日本では家族みんなでテーブル（あるいはコタツ）を囲み、家庭料理をつつきながら談話するのが普通の光景だ。よほどのことがないかぎり、みなで顔をつきあわせて、日々のことを話し合いながら、家庭料理をいただくのがいいと多くの人は思っているはずである。
一時期、日本でも、「孤食」という言葉が取りざたされて問題になっていた。しかしバブルが崩壊してから、ファストフードよりスローフードのよさがあらためて認識されはじめ、家庭志向の傾向が強くなり、今日の平均的な日本人の８割は、家庭で、家族で食べる料理に大変満足しているという話だ。

英国人が勤務中のランチタイムに食事にあてている平均時間は約3.5分というレポートを目にした。2000人を対象におこなわれた調査では64％が食事以外にさまざまな用事をこなしていると答え、32％が昼休みは１日のなかでも重要な用事をこなす唯一の機会と答えたという。（ロンドンに拠点をおく携帯電話会社の調査より）。
ランチタイムに食事をしないで何をしているのかというと、ネットバンキングやネットショッピングなどをしているという。ヨーロッパ諸国の中ではもっとも労働時間が長いとされる英国人。しかしかつての昼休みで「休む」平均時間は60分であったのに対し、いまでは平均19分と格段に減っているというのも、ちょっと意外である。帰宅時間が早く、すぐにお茶の時間をとって優雅に休んでいる英国人のイメージはあくまでもステレオタイプであるのだと知らされる。

英国でハウスシェアをしているＧ氏は、かつて私がディナータイム近くになるといそいそと準備をしてテーブルにつく動作をみて、ちょっと不思議に思ったそうだ。対する私は頑固なところをみせて、個人的に一人で食べるのが嫌いということだけではなく、日本人として育った以上こうした習慣は、なかなか変えられないし変えたくはないと、口をすっぱくしていっていたことがある。食卓はコミュニケーションをとる時間としてぴったりの場所だし、第一人といっしょにたべたほうが格段においしくなる、これは国境を越えたもののはず、とも付け加えた。そうこうしているうちに、彼もごく自然に食卓につくようになった。
そんなある日、Ｇ氏は手製のラム肉の心臓料理をご馳走してくれた。彼によれば、子供のころは毎週のようにこうした手のこんだ料理を、家族と一緒にテーブルを囲んで食べていたのだそうである。「昔はこうして、きちんと料理をしてみんなで食事をとっていたものだけれど」とＧ氏。ここに来て再びテーブルで食事をとることの大切さ、そしてなにより楽しさを思い出したという。
なまじっか英国版ファストフードの王様フィッシュアンドチップスが国民的な料理で、パブでも公道でも「立ち飲み歩き食べ」の習慣のあり、さらに「案外」労働時間が多い最近の英国人にとっては、アメリカ式ファストフードはまたとない便利さで生活に浸透した。この傾向が顕著になったのは日本と同様に、この20年くらいのことだそうである。そして多くの家族が手の込んだ食事をせずにひとりひとりで簡単にすますことを覚え、それに疑問に思わず、食卓を囲んで食べることを忘れかけてしまっているという。

ソファは、ひとりひとりがゆったりとリラックスするのにいい。ましてや寒い日、暖炉際でちらちらと燃える火をみながらくつろぐのは最高だ。それは普通の英国人の生活に欠かせないものであるのだが、一方で孤食をうながすものにもなりえる。
英国から日本が学ぶべきことは多い。が、ソファの孤食を習慣化することだけはなんとも避けたいものである。家族や親しい人とともに食事を囲み、一日を語り合う幸せをみすみすとりのがすことがあろうか。とはいっても、こんな考えもふと頭をよぎる。ちょっと極端かもしれないいけれど、世界一おしゃべりな英国人が食卓を囲んだら、食事そっちのけで議論に花咲かせてしまい、気づけば冷えた食事が・・・ということにもなりかねない。そんなことをするくらいならソファで食べたほうがいいというのならば、あるいは理にかなっているともいえなくもないが・・・。
なぜ日本人が世界一長寿で、太りすぎが少ない国民性を保っているのか考えてみる。もともとの体質もあるだろうし、食材や調理法そのものの違いもあるだろう。ましてや食卓の有無だけでは証明はできないけれど、すくなくとも毎日のちょっとした談話と味覚の楽しみが、体にいい善玉菌を生んでいないと誰がいいきれるだろう。ただしあまり悦に入って飲みすぎ食べすぎに及ぶのには要注意である。

楽しいエッセイ拝読。
「孤食」なる言葉があるのを知りました。
「ソファで孤食を」は「ティファニーで朝食を」を思い出させる
題名ですが、背景を知ってしまうと前者の方はあまりロマンチック
な雰囲気じゃなくなってしまいますね。生活習慣が個々人の考えや集団との関わりにおける行動様式さえ変えることがありますから、
イギリス人のこうした食生活の変化はイギリス人のものの捉えかたや性格まで影響を及ぼしているかも知れませんね。
それにしても、昼食時の時間活用の仕方なんかみても、なにかゆとりが無い感じがします。これなんか、私達が日ごろ抱いているイギリス人のゆったり感というか余裕からずいぶんかけ離れた印象になりますね。
議論好きなイギリス人が、おしゃべりにくたびれて、ひとりで
ファーストフードを食べているときのしばしの静寂と気持ちの
落ち着きがたまらなくいいなんて言ってもらいたくないですね。
やはり、食事はみんなが集って、その日の出来事を話し合い、
ときにはおやじさんから小言の一つも言われる、そんな
なんでもない団欒がいいんだと思います。
日本のサラリーマンが昼時連れ立って近くのそばやかレストラン
で食事をするのも、見方からすれば、いつもいつも一緒に、さぞ開放感がないんじゃないかということもいえるでしょうが、あれはあれで結構職場でのコミュニケーションには有効みたいですしね。
こんなところに「個」の確立なんて変な理論をもちださず、「孤」の食事で孤高に済ませるなんて習慣はあまり歓迎すべきではないでしょうね。
お友達のＧ君がやがては昔の家族が楽しんだみんなでの食事の良さを思いだし、そうした習慣に回帰するのは結構Ｇ君のためにも
幸せなことじゃないかと思います。
孤食、個室などに固執する生活慣習は人間的な温かみにも欠けているように思います。昔、おじいさん、おばあさん、お父さん、お母さん、子供達等々が一緒に暮らした大家族制度がいつの間にか小単位の核家族になってしまいました。ましてや、そのなかでの「孤食」は避けたいですね。「ソファで孤食を」の題名は素敵なのですが・・・・。

私も、気になるのは昼休みの使い方の調査です。
それをみたとき、驚きはしませんでしたが
「ああ、やっぱりそうなのか」とおもいました。
例え一杯のソバでも、１，２分オフィスから多く歩いて
うまいものを食べに行きたい日本人からすると
残念ながらあまりにテキトウに見えます。
それでいてダイエットや菜食主義に熱心なのですから
なんとも不思議な感じがしますね。
誰でも得て不得手があるでしょうが
文学や政治などに比べ
アングロサクソン系の英米人は食事に関しては、
あまり得手ではないようにおもいます。
もちろん全員ではないにしろ。
こうした指摘をあげたとして、議論で返されますので
やはり、食事も味わう前に冷えるというものですね。
そうした傾向も
おもしろいといえばおもしろいのかもしれませんが・・・
私はちゃぶ台がすきです。
そこでソバやそうめんを食べます。
そうした風情が、やはり自分のルーツを教えてくれます。
