日付変更線症候群

欧州から帰国して成田空港に降り立ち、日本の風景に触れて感じるのは、日本の景色が、極めて平面的に見えるということである。目鼻顔立ちの凹凸がはっきりとしている国々の人々の顔に見慣れ、その対極に位置する日本に降り立つわけだから、故郷の風景がそのように見えるのも無理もないのかもしれない。

光が拡散し反射して、眼前に陰影をのこす。景色、道行く人々の姿は、奥行きとともにはっきりと立体感を帯びている。・・・というのが欧州やアフリカなどの乾燥した国での印象。これは旅という特別な時間と空間の中での勝手な思い込みにすぎないと思っていたのだが、まんざら錯覚でもないらしいことを知った。
ある先生が、視覚と絵画の関係について書いていた。それは日本の気候風土は、その湿度も助けて、光の反射、拡散の程度が、実際にあるものたちを平面的に見せる環境にあるというものだった。そうした気候風土の日本で、線で輪郭をとらえる平面的な浮世絵や漫画が発展したのも驚くにあたらない。
日本人にとっては、日本の風景が当たり前。ましてやその風景が平面的であるのかないのかなんて、日常生活の中では考えない。しかしとりわけ乾燥した国からやってきた人が日本に降り立ったら、平面的な浮世絵の世界にまよいこんでしまったかのような気分になってもおかしくはない。私の帰国時の印象は、これに極めて近いものがある。
一方すくなくとも西洋では、ルネッサンス時代から色の重ね合わせや濃淡により被写体そのものを忠実に表現する、写実的な立体感を崇拝した描き方が発展した。こうした手法も、もともと奥行きをとらえやすい気候風土があったからこそ発展したものだとすれば理にかなう。
日本が開国してから西洋では一時期ジャポニズムが風靡し、平面的な表現を研究する芸術家が多く出てきた。例えば浮世絵をこよなく愛したゴッホの絵画はどこか平面的な感じがする。彼の絵が日本人に圧倒的な人気があるのは、その悲しい一生に彩られた知名度の高さはもちろん、日本人にとって見て心地よいと思えるほどよい平面性を持っているからかもしれない。
視覚のズレがひきおこす「異国情緒」。これを仮に「日付変更線症候群」としておこう。時差ボケに近いものだが、時差だけでなく海外と日本との間での文化的なギャップが五感に与える影響のことである。特効薬は特にない。
来週、私は海外から成田に降り立つ予定だ。その風景は、日本人として育った私の視覚にとってストレスのない、穏やかで平らな、心地よいもののはずである。これは旅人が国境を越えて心に描く心象風景のひとつにすぎないのかもしれないけれど、私はこの視覚現象をひとまず「日付変更線症候群」の一症状ということにして、帰途につこうと思う。

間もなくの帰国、比較的長い英国での生活に
しばしの別れを告げるとき、去来するものが多々
あるでしょうね。今までの意識は英国での生活、
その生活とのかかわりの中で組み込まれているリズムと
思考、それが日付変更線を通過したとたん、現実の
母国に返る。
母国日本は、正に秋の気配。朝方の冷気が当たり一面を
濃い霧のなかに閉ざし、平面的な景色の識別さえ一時は
難しくさせた今朝方の濃霧でした。
成田に着く時間は分かりませんが、もし、朝方の到着であれば、
上空からは緑濃い千葉の森と実をふんだんにつけたやや黄ばんだ
絨毯のような田んぼが暖かにあなたの帰国を迎えてくれるはずです。そして、機体が母国の土地にランディングし、イミグレーション手続きが進み、到着ロビーに出、なにやらあたりを漂うアジア的な空気に懐かしさがこみあげ、急にオリエンタルの顔つきの老若男女がおおいことに気がつく頃、すでに「日付変更線症候群」とも
しばしお別れということになるのでしょうね。
日本では久々の和食、冷奴、そしてラーメン等々、お母さん手づくりの料理がきっと待ってるでしょう。恐らく、母国の食べ物を大量、急速摂取して、今度は「肥満恐怖症候群」のことが気になるかも知れませんね。

ロシア上空をずっと飛んでいて、日本海上から
北海道の先、東北ときて、富士山がみえたら
いいなぁとおもっております。
富士が見えたら、もう犬吠崎です。
九十九里沿岸海上を大きく旋回して
房総上空へと参ります。そこにはやはり
地理的にも平らな、私の育った場所である
関東の平野がひろがっています。

日本は自然と味覚、これが最高。
食べ過ぎてしまうでしょう。肥満恐怖症候群手前にならぬよう
心して、帰国したいと思います。
