おとしはいくつ

ゾウのEuan君は2歳になったばかりとのことだ。同じ動物でも、最近ヒトの年齢についての興味深いデータを目にした。（財）日本生産性本部が数年前に日本、アメリカ、イギリス、ドイツの４カ国の技術者に対して行った調査の結果である。問いは、「あなたの周囲を見て技術者として第一線で活躍できるのは、平均的に見て何歳くらいとお考えですか」。これに対しいくつか答えの選択肢があり、その中のひとつ「年齢関係なし」の項目をチェックした回答者の割合は・・・

ドイツ 71．8％
イギリス 72．3％
アメリカ 77．8％
ということである。つまり日本は、調査対象となった他の３カ国に比べ極度に年齢を気にしているという結果だ。この調査は世界の中でも私が見たデータはたったの４カ国、しかも日本以外はすべて欧米諸国の間でおこなわれたもので、数字の格差も際立って見える。しかし、他主要経済大国に比べ日本社会がどれほど年齢によって判断・支配されているのか知るには十分である。
調査に含まれている一国・英国では、（子供のそれ以外は）年齢の話は滅多に出ない。血液型や星座でも同様のことがいえる。普通に生活している限り年齢（あるいは血液型や星座）によるレッテルをはられることはほとんどない。少なくとも私の周囲はそうである。冒頭にあげた調査結果も極めて妥当といえる社会が存在しているわけで、大変年齢の離れた者同士の交友関係も珍しくない。個人主義が徹底し、日本のように年齢や立場によって言葉遣いを変える必要がなく、年功序列の風土がないせいもあるのだろう。
よしあしを言おうというのではないが、比較的「年齢は関係ない」英国社会とくらべて、日本社会ではあまりにも年齢についての言及が多いと感じる。メディアに限らず日常会話の中でも年齢ネタは頻繁にみられる。「△□はまだ若い」「○×はもう年だ」「◎△は同じ年」「もうすぐ×才になるから、あのひとももうオバサン（オジサン）」「○才にして×□を達成！」などという話題は日常茶飯事だ。雑誌書籍やネットの世界でも、「○才までに成功する術」「△才までにやっておきたいこと」だとか「勝ち組」「負け組」といったような、年齢や年代で線引きをしている企画や著書が多く見られる。
消費者市場といわれる今日、「マーケットが多様化して消費者がわがままになってきている。それに対応しなくては生き残りは不可能」と考える企業側は、年齢別（あるいはそれに付随しがちなステイタス）を狙ってのマーケティング及び商品投入に余念がない。
サービス、化粧品、ファッション、それにライフスタイル関連のメディアや広告・・・さまざまな消費市場で見られる年齢別ラインナップ。きめ細かで、かゆいところに手が届くコンテンツたち。しかしそれらもエスカレートすると年齢による区分けや所属意識を消費者に認識させてしまうことになる。ただでさえ柔軟性に富み、流行に敏感な日本人だ。こうした我々の社会一般常識でいう「年相応」という通念を食い物にし、市場経済の流れにのって個人の行動パターンを規制しすぎたり、潜在的な能力を押さえつけてしまったり、ましてや偏見を呼んでしまったりするとしたら、それは「年齢階層市場」の呪縛としか正直思えない。
すべてはきめこまかなマーケティングにより、多様化するニーズにこたえ市場を活性化させるための努力だといえばまぁまぁきこえはいい。しかしその一方で、いっそうの雇用促進や産業の発展・創出が求められているいま、年齢に対する偏見のないユニバーサルな社会構造に対する意識向上も同じように期待され、発展してしかるべきだろう。
人生は一度きり。年齢のレッテルにより限られた時間と知恵とエネルギーを制約してしまうのはもったいない。それぞれに与えられた年代がわけへだてなく幸せになれる社会があればよい。しかしながら「そうはいっても現実は難しいでしょ」と思ってしまうのが人の常、ならばせめてゾウのEuan君のかわいい姿を見て童心にかえるのもヒト心というもの。

年齢といえば最近気になることがありました。
幼稚園の運動会だと思いますが、多分父兄の
席取りのためでしょう、朝の６時半ごろ、開門前の
幼稚園外周に３０メーターぐらいのお父さん方が
地面に座り込んで順番待ち（多分そうだと思いますが）を
しているのです。このお父さんがたは家庭ではとても優しく
家族総出で息子か娘の応援にかけつけるために朝早くから
順番待ちをしてるんでしょうが、すわっているお父さんたちの
無表情で活気のない表情たら情けないぐらいでした。
朝早いので眠いとか、怖い奥さんにいわれてしぶしぶくり出した
ということももちろんあるでしょうが、このお父さんがたの年齢は
押しなべて２０台から３０半ば。子の覇気のない集団にも
企業の技術やさんも当然いたと思われますが、こういった技術やさんに
もし、言われるアンケートを実施したら、大半の技術やさんが「もうとっくに
自分達の時代は過ぎてますよ」との答えが出てくるんじゃないかと
思うぐらいです。どこか疲れてる、夢のない顔をしている、ふてくされたような
生気のない顔をしている・・・・・・・。この親達が幼稚園生の親である。
この人たちの年齢は正に技術の中心的役割を果たすべき歳といえるかと
思いますが、すでに一丁あがり的退廃的、倦怠感さえ感じさせたものです。
どうしてこんなにも疲れた表情なのか？
技術の一線に立つべき年齢のひとがこの疲れた有様。
後輩にもう譲りますといいたげな情けないムード。
朝早いのは分かる。
ただ、その辺が非常に気になったわけです。
若い人が、バリバリやるべき極めて重要な年齢のひとが、
技術戦争に勝ったのか負けたのかは知りませんが、くたびれた表情。
日本の若者がこうなら、その延長線上にある先輩や高齢者も押して
知るべし。上のアンケートの国際比較はこうした日本人全般の
疲れた人々の体質と疲れさせる、若くしてエネルギーを枯渇させる
日本の社会環境、生活環境、企業環境あたりを一面語っているようにも
思えます。
団塊の世代が急速に第一線から引くこれから、幼稚園児のお父さん方の
世代にして早や疲れをみせる社会全般の雰囲気。死ぬまで社会全体が世代を
通し、年齢に拘泥せず、チャレンジャブルな精神を許容するような雰囲気とシステムを採りいれるようになれば、アンケートの結果は確実にイギリス並に変化するんだと思いますが、では、どうしたらそうなるのか、真剣に考えるべき課題ではありますね。

日ごろは元気のあるお父さんたちも、
週末ともなると疲れがたまっているのかもしれませんね。
数週間前ですが、読売新聞に、30才代の覇気のなさを
責めずに理解をしてあげよう、というような記事が載っていました。
大学の先生の記事であったかとおもいますが、
ざっくりいえば、いまの30代は働き盛りではあれど
バブル崩壊後に社会人になり、景気が悪い悪いといわれながら
そしてIT革命がある中で、とさまざまな価値観に揺られながら、
いまでは上から下からとはさまれながら責任ある立場を負わされており
大変な年代であるのだと、ちょっとしたフォローを入れたものでありました。
私も同じ年代に属しているだけに、少々複雑な気持ちに
なったものです。
いつの時代に、どの世代をすごしたかによっても、その世代の
傾向があらわれるとおもいます。いま30代の人々も、
不景気時代の苦労をにじませるだけではなくて、
単純な言葉ですがこれからの社会に向けて
明るく元気に社会を進んでいけるといいなとおもいます。
ただでさえ、イチローや松井、新庄などなど
がんばっている主要野球選手もみな同世代。
話題の女優さんたちもみなこの世代。
ただし、運動会のせきとりでの覇気については、
結局はひとりひとりの気持ちの持ちようかな、とも思ったり（笑）
