【トリノ/イタリア 10日 AFP】トリノ五輪の開会式がコムナーレ競技場（Stadio Comunale）で行われ、開催国であるイタリア代表選手団はフィギュアスケートに出場するカロリーナ・コストナー（Carolina Kostner）を旗手に全出場国の最後に会場へ入場した。トリノ五輪は冬季五輪としては過去最高の80カ国･地域から約5000人の選手や役員が参加し、26日まで開催される｡(c)AFP GOH CHAI HIN
～ジェントルマンズ・ウォーク
オリンピックの開会式はいつも楽しい。各国選手団がいよいよ入場という場面になると、毎回のことながら“世界各国いろいろな顔があるなぁ”と感心しつつ、お国柄やセンスを観察しているうちに最後まで見てしまう。トリノ五輪の開会式で日本選手団の次に入場した英国選手団は、女性は白、男性は黒一色という出で立ち。特に男性はヴィクトリア朝の紳士を思わせる、外国人が喜ぶステレオタイプの姿を披露していた。国柄を象徴してかあまりスポーティでない感じである。

～熱血スポ根にあらず
英国といえば、フットボールを愛する人々以外、目に見えてスポーツに燃えている人をさほど見かけない。クリケットのほかラグビー、ゴルフ、テニス、乗馬など盛んなスポーツは数多く、陸上競技や格闘技などの分野で地道に努力しているアスリートもファンもたくさん存在する。が、日本にあるような、一発入魂スポ根精神はあまり表に出てこない。(ちなみに野球についてはルールを知らない人が五万といる)。依然として階級制度が色濃く残るために、好きなスポーツが個人により分散していることも影響しているようである。
～山のない国
夏は涼しく、冬は寒くなく、豪雪も台風も地震もない。そんな穏やかこのうえない英国では、目に見えたスポ根は育たないらしい。ここで高い山がないことは有名な話で、H・グラントが出演した映画「ウェールズの山」を見れば一目瞭然だ。ブリテン島で山が多い北ウェールズやスコットランドで、もっとも高い山でさえ１３４８メートルしかない。これは富士山の半分にも満たない高さだ。
～スキー未体験率
冬期五輪にちなむと、当然雪山といわれるものも少ない。偶然かもしれないが、いまのところロンドン近郊で「スキーが楽しみ」と言っている人に会ったことがない。むしろ「雪山でスキーをしたことがない」という人も多くお見受けする。ある英国人が、「僕の町にはスキー場があるよ」といって指差したものは、山というよりはなだらかな丘陵になぞられた本当に小さな草スキー場で、「えっ、あれが？？」と拍子抜けした覚えがある。といってもヨーロッパの雪山などがすぐ近所にあるのだから、本格的にウインタースポーツにいそしむ場合、練習場には困らないだろうけれど。
～メダルの数で言えば…
では彼らは本当にスポーツに熱心に打ち込まないのかというとそうでもない。世界大会や冬夏五輪大会を通してみると、少なくとも毎回のように熱く燃える日本よりは多くメダルを獲得している率が高い。ちょっと妙だが「英国は日本よりはメダルが多いんだ」と誇らしげに主張していた初老の英国人を見かけたことがある。同じ小さな島国と比較して、という意味だったのだろうか。
～本当は熱いんです
昨年夏に2012年オリンピック開催地がロンドンに決まったとき、人々はことのほか喜んでいた。永年の宿敵フランスの首都パリと権利を競い合って勝ったことが一段とその喜びを倍化させたようである。スポーツ熱血漢からは一線を置きたい彼らもちゃんと愛国心は燃やしているのだ。当面は、ユニオン・ジャックの旗がたなびくオリンピックに向けて、紳士淑女のお国柄に恥じぬよう土地や施設サービス開発で大忙しのロンドンだろう。

多様なスポーツがあるがどうしてある種のスポーツがある国にポピュラーで人気があるのか、どうしてある種のスポーツがその国でさっぱり流行らないのか研究の素材には事欠かない。英国の場合、恐らく大英帝国時代、世界のありとあらゆるスポーツに触れる機会があったに違いないが、彼らの孤高なまでの個人主義と貴族趣味が大勢でキャキャやる集団的スポーツに興味を示すことを阻害したのかもしれない。或いは誇り高き英国人の歴史から見て、スポーツに躍起になることはすでに卒業してしまったといういわば国民的諦念があるのかもしれない。では、それに代わるものがあるかというとそうでもない。意識のなかでは鬱々したものがあるが、それを明確には認めたがらないけれども、鋭い論評やディベートのなかに頭脳とプライドを刺激し、満足させるいわば知のスポーツがある。シャーロックホームズの上品な論理的推理思考プロセスのなかにスポーツの持っている心身の高揚感をエンジョイしているのかもしれない。からだのスポーツが作り出す熱気と汗とエネルギーのせめぎあいは英国人の場合、知的な文芸活動や時としてシニカルな評論の世界で見事に花咲かせていると言えるかもしれない。

まさしく「論理的思考プロセス」は、英語圏の人々やドイツ語圏の人々に多く尊ばれているところだとおもいます。思考を美しく明晰に伝えることがすなわち教養の醍醐味という感覚でしょう。それを会話するあるいは説明する相手に対して常におこなわれていることであるとしたら、独自のスポーツといえるかもしれませんね。日本は平均的に出来のよい勤勉な人が多いのは、言葉によらず内心の自由を保障されているからかもしれません。精神的に、絶対的神によることなく家庭のレベルでよくしつけされているということですね。欧米となると、宗教や階級の違いなどもあるのかもしれませんが、誤魔化しがきかない言語・文化の中で発達した頭脳を持つ人と、そうでない人との差が明確に出ているような気がします。もちろん人柄の面ではどの国もかわりませんが。

別の視点で英国とスポーツを考察。一つは英国の依然として社会を支配している階級社会との関連、もう一つは気候との関連。前者は上層階級にポピュラーなスポーツ、これにはなかなかそれ以下の階層の関わりや参加が実質的に、或いは意識の上で参加しにくい伝統というか、雰囲気というか、社会的コンセンサスというか、そういう面で難しい環境を形成しているということ。後者は戸外での平均的なスポーツを難しくしている環境。この二つの要素が、もちろんこれだけではないが、英国で階層の隔てなくみんながスポーツを通じての喜びと幸せを阻害しているということ。結論的に言えば、みんなが共通に燃える場がますます少なくなってきつつあること。意識は高く、伝統に対する誇りは抜群であるが、一方では植民地統制の時代からの身についた搾取体系がDNAとして取り込まれ、英国民共通が歓喜し、魂を揺さぶるエネルギーの発散を阻止していること、これが英国で一部のスポーツを除き不活発な状況を招いているということではなかろうか。単なる一つの見方に過ぎないことではあるけれど。

プライド、階級社会、そして気候というのは、特にイギリスのスポーツ文化や精神に影響していますよね。（私は日本人なので、なにも英国のやり方がいいとは特に思いませんが）。頭が先に行ってしまいがちなのが現状でしょう。それで肉ばかり食べていれば、健康にもよくありません。ということで最近とみに、健康のためのスポーツや食は見直されてきているようですよ。健康的精神づくりということで。私はそれより根本的な食習慣から見直していかないとだめかなとおもうのですが・・・・・。
ところで、これはスポーツというのか微妙ですが、BBC放送などを見ると、自然関係の番組が秀逸です。その裏話を見ても、かなりの情熱を傾けています。砂漠のど真ん中から、人類未踏の洞窟地下深くまでその取材力はかなりのものです。この点では、諸外国にはない独自のスポーツ的探究心がみられるなぁとおもいます。おかげで世界の人々も、いままで見たことがない生き物や自然をみれるのですから、並大抵のことではないでしょう。国によって得意分野があるものなんですね。
