春になると、多くの人々がそわそわと落ち着かなくなる。菜園を手がけている人はとりわけ胸がさわぐのだそうだ。新しい芽が出て、葉が育ち、花が咲き、実が生り、種になる。そうした四季を通じた変化を毎年繰り返し肌で感じるがゆえに、すべての始まりである春によせて、理屈のない心身の高揚を感じるのだろう。

英国はいますべてが一斉に芽吹き始める季節を迎えている。陰鬱な冬から一転して、自然は穏やかで繊細な緑の息吹とともに色とりどりの花々で華やかに満ち溢れていく。
たまたま「ロックダストRockdust」という新しい言葉を耳にした。「ロックダスト」とは聞きなれない。農業や地質学に明るくないせいもあるのだが、調べてみるとこれは火山岩を顆粒にしたもので、土壌改善や堆肥の際の環境保全にいいという。多くのミネラルを含み、やせた酸性の土に養分を与えて復活させる役割があり、肥えた土をつくる。そしてなによりも野菜や果物を見違えるように大きく健康なものに育てあげる天然の秘薬だそうである。
私が実際に耳にした「ロックダスト」は、スコットランド中部のパースシャーにあるコラース石切場Collace Quarryから産出されるものだ。ここで採石された火山岩を砕いたものが商品として出荷される。
スコットランドから産出される火山岩と聞くと、なんともエキゾティックで、なにか肥料として以外にも効き目がありそうだが、ミネラル成分を多く含んでいて、ゆえに微生物の働きを活性化させ、肥えた有機土壌を作るのを促進するということだ。これを栽培前の土作りと、収穫後の土休め前に所定の量を配合する。すると、有機栽培の果物や野菜、花や芝生まで大きく健康に育つ。
この「ロックダスト」の恩恵をかりて、まるまると豊かに育ったニンジンやブリテン名産のリーク、引用写真にも登場しているパースニップといった写真をいくつか見つけた。それらを栽培している人々は、大人の首の太さにまで実った野菜を手に誇らしげだ。
近年、「ロックダスト」についてはさまざまな研究がなされていて、主要新聞のカバーストーリーで紹介されたり、ラジオ番組の特集を組まれたりしている。そしてその仕掛け人とも言うべき存在がある。農業ジャーナリストのグラハム・ハーヴェイGraham Harvey氏による「We Want Real Food」キャンペーンがそのひとつだ。
私たちが日ごろ食べる食品の栄養成分が見えないところで減り続け、それが人間の健康にも影響を及ぼしている。これを食い止めて、健康な生活を送ろうではないか、というのが、「We Want Real Food」キャンペーンの主たる狙い。
こうしたキャンペーンには背景がある。英国では過去50年の間に英国で流通する野菜から24％のマグネシウム、27％の鉄分、46％のカルシウムが失われている。また、野菜にとどまらず牛肉からはオメガ３の脂肪分が、牛舎に囲まれた牛から採れた牛乳はビタミンや抗癌作用のあるCLAの含有量が減少しているという。キャンペーンはこうした状況をすこしでも改善していきたい人々に、少しずつ浸透しつつあるようだ。
「ロックダスト」もこのキャンペーンの意図に合う商品として扱われている。つまり有機栽培のための商品であるが、ひとことで有機栽培といっても定義が難しい。英国でよく「オーガニックフードしか食べません」と明言している人をお見かけするが、有機栽培が100％完全に有機栽培といえるのかどうか疑わしい場合もあるくらいなので、あえてここで有機栽培礼賛をすることはしない。
ただし専門家の知恵と工夫が繰り返されて、地球環境をできるだけ乱さずに（あるいは自然の本来の姿に近い状態に戻しながら）、いっそう豊かな作物が採れるようになり、それが人々の健やかな生活に寄与していくのなら、キャンペーンの大小を問わず一考の価値はある。
すべて地球が生んだ自然の循環のうえに私たちはいきている。「ロックダスト」が流行る、売れるという話に私はあまり興味がない。ただ人間の消費欲に耳を傾けるのではなく、自然が告げるわがままに耳を傾けながら生きていく、つまり自然との共存への模索はこれからいっそう必要だと感じる。
青空が広がった今日、ちょうど一週間も前にまいたロケットの種が、はやくも小さな芽を一生懸命出しているのに気づき、思わず笑みをもらさずにはいられなかった。私のほんのささやかなる菜園に「ロックダスト」は使われていないが、英国の春の恵みに寄せて所感を一筆。

早速のコメント嬉しいです。私ももっと庭いじりのことや植物の知識があればいいなと、最近思うようになりました。もともと自然を見たり感じたりするのは大好きですが、一昔前までは自分でなにかを育てるといったようなことは、なかなか目の届かなかった領域です。ロックダストのことをみたとき、なにかを育てるにも色々こだわりやポリシーが必要なんだなぁと感じました。
