贅沢なことに、日本では一昔前にくらべてずっと、レジャーで外国間の行き来が楽になり、映像でもずっと身近に外国に触れられるようになった。みれば、世界にはさまざまな顔があるとおもう。いずれも共通するのは、喜怒哀楽の表情。人は皆同じなのだと肌で感じることができる。しかし皮肉なことに外国人どうしが一つの場所に集まると、いさかいもおきる。オリンピックやサッカーなどの、平和のシンボルとしたいスポーツの国際大会にしても、大会の盛り上がりに便乗して人種差別的な言動が表ざたになったり、各国のサポーター同士のなじりあいが加熱して、まことに後味が悪い醜聞もおこる。これを蚊帳の外と傍観できればよいが、実際に世界の舞台に立つことになればそれを無視することはできない。

日本でも、ここ数十年で海外旅行に行くことが当たり前になった。最近は人々の海外に行くことへの目的がどんどん広範にわがままになってきて、ホームステイにはじまっておけいこや長期留学、海外ロングステイや海外就職、海外投資・起業、そして海外移住といったように、「自分の人生プランニング」の中の一要素として海外経験を活用させようとする情報があふれかえっている。なかにはあおりたてるような情報もあったりして、やりすぎの感すらある。
ともあれ、憧れの国に住みたい、好きな国で好きな趣味を思う存分満喫したい、そして自分の実力を試したいなどなど、いろいろな目的意識があって海外へ目を向けようとするのは、向上心のあらわれとしていいことだとおもうし、そうした流れを構築できる世の中になったことは、ある意味で感謝しなければならない。イチローや松井秀喜だって、それがなければアメリカに渡れない。
短期の海外旅行なら、訪れた国の表層を眺め、典型的な風景や味覚を楽しんで異国情緒を満喫し、気分転換しながら帰国後にアルバムに飾っておけばいい。しかし長期的スパンで海外に本格的に出ていく際には、それなりの覚悟をしなければならない。
海外に出る、ということは、つまりマジョリティ文化圏からマイノリティ文化圏に一転して身を投じるということだからである。
和食がたべたいとおもい、店に行けばすぐに刺身がうっているというような環境ではない。日本語だって通じない。日本の常識が非常識になり、通例が異例になり、美徳が悪徳になることもある。
日本人も中国人も見分けがつかない多くの外国人に、「ジャッキー・チェン」と呼ばれても動じることはない。とにかくマイノリティに転ずるわけだから、マジョリティ文化の威力を多少とも受け入れ、理解しようとする余裕もたなければならない。
「郷に会えば郷に従え」という言葉は、海外ではそう簡単にひとことではすまされないようにおもえる。外国で育ったものとして、どうしてもゆずれないもの、ほこりあるものをを維持することは誰にでもある。それが自らの信仰であったり道徳心であったりすればならなおさらだ。
幸い、「一般的」日本人の多くは宗教的に対外的な争点がすくないため、過激な宗教問題にからめられることは少なかろう。しかし外国に暮らすときには、本国では相当の人口がある日本人とて、マイノリティとなるがゆえに、社会に通じる「あうんの呼吸」や甘えの許容が限られてくる。様々な分野で取捨選択を本国にいるとき以上にもとめられ、自分がどのように道を選び、切り開いていかねばならないのか考えざるをえなくなる。
これからさらに世界へと広がっていくだろう日本人にとって、学びの海はまだまだ陶然と目の前に広がっている。すくなくともいえることは、海外では日本にいるとき以上に、ひとりひとりが日本人ならではの「居心地のよさ」をみつけていく努力をしなければならないということだろう。どの地域や国にいっても、柔の姿勢で受け止め、剛の精神で自らも尊重する、その和の道を見出そうとする作業は、思った以上に重要なことのように思える。

時代の異物。遺物と思しきねずみ（発するところの音からして
ごく小さなハツカネズミのような類と思われる）が天井を駆け巡り、生命維持のためか、生来のものかじりの性癖か、乾燥した食材ならぬ木材を連続的なカシャカシャした音を立てながらひとの眠りの幸せを遮断する。こんな訳で、この数日4時には目が覚め、PCを開け、今回の記事を拝見。ねずみへの憤りはしぶとく継続中ではありますが、それはそれとして・・・・。
日本が豊かになり、経済力がつくにつれ、ありがたいことに多くの日本人がどんどん海外に出かけていく。何事も経験が大事だし、海外にその気になれば出かけていけるということがどんなに恵まれた環境下に日本人がいるかということを先ずは感謝すべきでしょうね。
ジョン万次郎という土佐の猟師が嵐で漂流しアメリカに渡り、
見ず知らずの彼の地で労働、学習、恋をして、やがてその地のみんなから愛され、また日本にもどる有名な話がありますが、これは百数十年も以上の昔のこと。この当時、海外に渡り、地元で生活し、しかもその国の人達から敬愛される体験をするというのは、今とは比べようのない苦労があったと思うけど、昔の日本人はそういうことをやった。すばらしいことだと思う。そういう意味では、異なる環境への順応性というのが大事だと思うけど、何よりもその国の人や生活に溶け込むという努力と意欲と実行が最重要ということになりましょうか。
ニューヨークに4年間過ごした大手の商社マンを知ってますが、この人は、経理やさんで4年間でまともに英語でやりとりした経験がなく、アメリカ人の友人をつくることもついぞなく、ただ、日本人組織のお守役に徹しただけの4年間だったように
見受けられ、これでは、この人の海外生活の意味はなんだったのかと思わざるを得ませんよね。これは極端な例ですが。
溶け込むということは、その国の文化や生活のなかにできるだけ身を投じるということでしょう。文化や生活は、ひとが作り出すもの。従って、その国でどれだけヒューマンリレーションを構築できるかということでしょうね。これが海外生活の最大メリットだと思います。一時的な旅行者の目で海外をみてみることも、
しないよりはした方がいいけれど、願わくばひととの関わりを
どれだけ実のあるものにするかということでしょう。
心がけ次第で、そんなひととの交わりの舞台を今の日本人が
経験し得るということは、本当に恵まれていることだと思います。マジョリティの生活の安心感と慣れの世界からマイノリティ
生活環境への転換は一気にはいきませんが、その国の人々や生活のなかに飛び込んでいくというやや緊張と工夫と知恵を要する作業と努力があれば、私たちの海外経験もより実りあるものになるんだと思います。
ジョン万次郎の時代より、いまは遥かに便利で海外が身近くなってますが、便利なだけに案外表層的な海外との行きかいにとどまっている現在の風潮はある意味で残念に思えます。

ひとりひとりが分かり合う
そうしたケースが増えていけば
少しずつでも軋轢も減っていけばいいと
いつもおもっています。
しかし現実は厳しい・・・そうこういっているうちに
北朝鮮がミサイル発射。
外国間では問題が山積みです。
平和を祈念するばかりです。
