＜06サッカーW杯＞ポルトガルがPK戦を制して準決勝へ - ドイツ

本日、イングランド対ポルトガル戦。イングランドの住宅地はいたって静かだ。人気がすくない。というより、すくなくとも私が見渡すエリアにはひとっこひとりいない。みんなテレビにかじりついているのである。試合は０対０でずれこみ、フリーキックとなった。緊張の瞬間であったが、おしくもイングランドの負けが決まった瞬間に、各方面から怒号が響いた。

私はいまイングランドにいながら、いずれのチームが勝ってもよいと思っていたほうである。しかしさすがにワールドカップの最中、日々イングランドのフラッグを見せ付けられていたために、イングランドに勝ってもらいたい気もしていた。勝たなければ、ほうぼうに掲げられた国旗の行方はどうなるのか・・・・。
本日のイングランドは快晴、夏日より。試合直後、開け放たれたいくつかの家の窓からは、負け戦の悔し泣きか、はたまた「賭け」に負けた（あるいは勝った）ことを知人友人に報告するためか、電話の音が鳴り響くのが聞こえた。
試合が終わって数分もしてから窓の外を見やると、さっきまでひとっこひとりいなかった通りに人気が戻ってきた。自転車も車も通り始めた。そしてさらに、パブのある方向が騒がしくなりはじめた。
そしていま、時刻は８時30分。陽の長いイングランドのサマータイム、オープンエアで用意されたパブのテーブルには、ビールを片手にイングランド戦うんぬんを語る人々の群れ。イングランドの国旗を背にかけた男性やフラッグをにぎりしめた女性が酔っ払いはじめている。「あのとき、ああしておけば」「あの場面であれがなかったら」などと、あれこれと「たられば」のシュミレーションをしては、負けてしまった事実を慰めているのに違いない。
勝っても、負けても、試合当日にみられる一般住宅街のパブの光景は同じだろう。でも、当面は、サッカー熱をおびたイングランド・フラッグのオンパレードも今日が最後。イングランドも明日は、旗日ではなく通常の日曜日に帰る。選手のみなさんお疲れ様でした。

イングランド敗戦残念でしたね。
久々の優勝を狙ってたのでしょうけど。
にぎやかに家々や軒並みのフラッグも負けると
急にしぼんでみえるのも、どの国も一緒。
しかし、４強に進出したチームはどこも
実力伯仲。体力、筋力、技術力すべてに。
それにしても、チームの連携プレーと体力に
おいては日本選手の力は4強チームに比べ
かなりの差を感じたのも事実。
これは、サッカーが日本ではまだマイナー
なスポーツだという証左とも感じます。
ともかく、イギリスのしばしの喧騒もおわり、
街々にはいつもの静寂と落ち着きがもどって
くることでしょう。
こうした最中、またイラクではテロで100名
以上の犠牲者が出た模様。
橋本 竜太郎が昨日死去。
宮本 藍さんが全米女子オープンで
実力を発揮できず。
小泉さんはブッシュさんとプレスリー記念館
を訪ね、ご機嫌のようす。
そうこうしてるうちに、早や7月、時間の
経過のみが気になります。
サッカー熱に浮かれたイングランドの
次なる楽しみと期待は何に向かうのでしょうか？

試合が終わった翌日にお店に行きましたら
国旗グッズが90％割引で販売されていました。
街中の旗も、ちょっとくたびれ加減、
一週間もすぎたいまでは、ほとんどがなくなりました。
あとは決勝でイタリアとフランスを
クールに見守るイギリス人がいることでしょう（笑）
