このたび「ナショナル・ジオグラフィック日本版」の写真コンテスト「人物部門」において、最優秀賞を受賞しました。

写真は、今年１月訪れたパキスタンのカシミールで撮影した避難民の子ども、そしてその子どもを深くシワの刻まれた手で包み込むように守る家族の写真です。
この時の取材は、テレビで行ったため、まったく雑誌メディアで発表してきませんでした。いえ、パキスタン地震の写真を、地震から３か月経った時点で発表してくれるメディアなど、今の日本にはないのかもしれない。
そこで、「プロ・アマOK」と書かれていた写真コンテストに応募したわけである。
欧米の優秀な写真家や作家と付き合っていて感心することがある。
それは仕事が安定するようになっても、コンテストや奨学金の申し込みを続けていることだ。
落選してしまえば、恥ずかしいし、プライドも傷つく。そればかりか表現者にとって一番大切な自信さえ失う可能性がある。
だが、表現する以上、それらのものをすべて引き受けなければならず、いや、そういったものを引き受けた上での表現なのだろう。
それが生き様としての表現であり、その気迫を彼らから感じることができるのだ。
また通信社や新聞社のカメラマンなら、新聞や雑誌、雑誌記者を対象にした賞も数々用意されているが、完全にフリーの場合、自分から仕掛けないと、誰も賞などくれはしない。
（たとえば「ピューリッツア賞」は、アメリカのマスメディアで紹介された記事や写真だけが対象になる。つまり、アメリカのメディアに配信できる新聞社や通信社が圧倒的に有利なのだ）
仕事は賞のためにやっているのではない。
だが、誰からも評価されることなく、発表し続けるのは、想像以上に辛いものだ。
雑誌からドキュメントのページが消え、真面目な本も売れない状態が当たり前になった社会だからこそ、私は表現者として、もう一度気合いを入れなおし、あらゆる場面で、見聞きしたことや、出会った人々の言葉を伝え続けたいと思う。
ちなみに、この写真はナショナル・ジオグラフィックの世界大会に出品されるという。
カシミールの声を世界に届けるチャンスが生まれたことに感謝。

おめでとうございます！！
桃井さんの写真にはすごく引きつけられるモノがあって、それに合わせた文章にもココロ打たれます。
パキスタンの番組を見て、自分に出来ることが何なのだろうと考えましたが、その時に友人にそのことを話したら、その話をすること・伝えることが今まさにできたよね。と言われ、私もその事実を届けることに参加できて、よかったと思いました。
