アフリカゾウさんから寄せられた質問の２番目、「どうして勉強しなきゃいけないの？」への、私なりの答えを書いてみたいと思います。
私は、すでにこのブログでも書きましたが、無茶苦茶な中学、高校時代を過ごしていました。
そして高校生の時には、３年間授業中寝続けた結果、ついたあだ名が「３年寝太郎」。
もっぱら活動は、高校が終わってからの喫茶店とパチンコ通い。（パチンコ代なんてなかったから、友だちの家の本を古本屋で売って、打っていました。今のように電動ではなく、玉を１つひとつ手で弾く台があった、なんとも和やかな話です）
そればかりか、すでに高校入学前からタバコを吸い始め、悪友仲間とワルサ三昧の日々。
何年か前にあった高校時代のクラス会で、私はみんなの話している姿を覚えているのですが、クラスのみんなは私の起きている姿をほとんど覚えていないことにびっくりしました。
私の意識があるのは、当然、起きている時だけ。
だから、みんなの話している姿を覚えていたのですが、しかし、ほとんど寝て過ごしたため、みんなにとっての私は寝ている桃井でしかなかったのです。
今から振り返っても、まったくひどく、ヤサぐれた高校時代をすごしたもんです。

■勉強嫌いの原因
だから、勉強は本当に嫌いでした。
原因のひとつに、少年期よりずっと悩まされてきた蓄膿症にありました。
ちょうど頬の裏にある副鼻腔が炎症を起こす病気ですが、いつも頭が重く、授業には集中できないし、記憶力も極端に低くなっていたのです。
（ところが、成人して、大学病院でレントゲンを撮って原因が分かったのですが、なんと、副鼻腔の問題ではなく、虫歯が原因だったのです。他の人と違い、奥歯の根が副鼻腔まで達していて、虫歯になると、その虫歯菌が、副鼻腔に炎症を起こしていたのです！ みなさんも気をつけて下さい。それが分かって以降、歯磨きに異常なほど気を遣うようになって、蓄膿症は完全に姿を消してしまいました）
■なぜ、勉強するのか？
話が逸れてしまいましたが、「なぜ、勉強するのか？」の答えですが、私には２つの意味があると思います。
１／ダマされないで、自分の権利を守るため。
現在の世界人口が６５億人。しかし、その中の１億人が「奴隷制」の犠牲者だと考えられています。
けれども多くの場合、昔の奴隷のように、足が鎖につながれ、自由に動けなかったり、売り買いされ、ただ働きをしいられているのではありません。
仕事もあり、お金ももらっている場合が圧倒的に多い。
では、どうして奴隷なのかというと、仕事もあり、お金ももらっているのですが、雇い主や社会システムにダマされ、もらうお金以上のお金を払わされているのです。つまり働く環境にいて、働けば働くほど、借金が増え、最終的にはその借金を払うために働くことになるわけです。
こうした状況を、私はアフリカでも中南米でも見てきました。
つまり、状況をしっかり把握しないと、思わぬ所に落とし穴があって、結局、借金漬けにされ、すべての権利を奪われてしまうわけです。
ここでちょっと考えてみたいのですが、奴隷が自分たちの生活とはまったく関係ないかとたとえば、実は違う。
人を奴隷制に叩き込む仕組みは、日本でも、ごく当たり前に用意されているのです。
たとえば、日本の複雑な携帯電話の料金体制なども、これに近いでしょう。
携帯電話は、本来、話すための「道具」です。
どこにいても連絡が取れることで、個々人を便利にするための道具だったのです。
しかし、いろいろなオプションが用意され、話す以外のこともできるようになりました。圧倒的に便利になったようにも思います。
でも、料金体系が複雑で、自分が払っているすべての料金を把握している人は少ないでしょう。その結果、ついつい知らないうちに、余分な料金を取られ続けることになる。それも高額。
そして、その余分な料金を払うために、人は余分に働かなくてはいけない状況に追い込まれているのです。
たとえば、車でもそうでしょう。
本来は移動をするための「道具」です。
しかし、半年ごとにモデルチェンジによって、必要でないものまでが加えられ、でも外見だけは少し変わるから、自分の所有欲を満足させるために、最新モデルを買い続けるという「買い物地獄」に陥ってしまうのです。
たとえば、世界の人とコミュニケーションをとるための「道具」である言葉、特に英語でも同じことは言えます。
駅前の英語クラスは、大抵、料金一括前払いですから、英語を話すために、数十万円が必要になります。経営を維持するためには、それはそれでしょうがない面もあるのでしょうが、しかし、話す内容がない人が多すぎる！
英語をはじめ、コミュニケーションとは、意思の疎通であり、話すことがあって初めて疎通できるのです。
話す内容が先で、話す道具としての英語は二の次のはず。本当に必要で、英語ができないのなら通訳を使えば済む話なのです。
主客逆転現象により、猫も杓子も、高い授業料を払う愚が日常化しており、その高い授業料を払うために、自分の時間を失いお金儲けに縛られる、奴隷化することになってしまうのです。
（私の場合、Amazon.com への支払いの多さには、辟易してしまいます。
必要だと思う本やＣＤ、ＤＶＤなどは、内容も確かめないまま、すぐにクリックひとつで買ってしまうため、１か月で１０万円ちかくなるときもあります。だから私はAmazon.com に奴属化しているのかもしれません。
でも、聞いてください。
私の仕事は、森羅万象すべてのことが関係してくるわけで、だから、森羅万象すべてのもので、面白そうな資料があると、クリックしてしまうわけです。
ね、これ、立派な言い訳でしょ！
この前衝動買いしてしまったのは、昔のドラマ「傷だらけの天使」のスペシャルＤＶＤボックス。さすがに後半部分だけでしたが、それでも３万円ほど！！ 衝動買いした理由は、「傷天」無頼な生き様を、もう一度思い出したかったから。あまりに功利的な生き方が社会を支配することに危惧した故のクリックでした。（実は酔った上でのワン・クリック）
というわけで、フォトジャーナリストという、なんだかわけの分からない職業だと、こうした衝動買いも「自己肯定」できるので、便利です）
話はまたまた逸れてしまいましたが、こうして考えていくと、人がいかに「道具」に振り回されているかに気づきます。
何のためにその道具が必要なのか？
もう一度、その意味を考えてみる必要がありそうです。
勉強をすることとは、考えることでもあります。
そして、自分の生き方を自分で選択し、決定することでもあるのです。
だから、自分の権利を守るためにも、基礎的な勉強は必要なのです。
