電気自動車の時代。中国が覇権を握る！？

エネルギー価格が高騰していることもあり、次世代エネルギーを使用する自動車の開発に注目が集まっています。
しかし、ハイテクを結集した＜水素エンジン自動車＞が、近い将来自動車の主役になることは無いでしょう。
技術的なハードルの問題もありますが、「鶏が先か卵が先か」の問題同様、水素エンジン自動車が普及しなければ、水素ステーションの建設は進まないでしょうし、水素ステーションの建設が進まなければ、水素エンジン自動車は普及しないでしょう。
ホンダの「アシモフ」という二足歩行ロボットは素晴らしいと思いますが、近い将来各家庭で使用されるようになるとは到底思えません。水素エンジン自動車もそのレベルと考えて差支えないでしょう。
ポルシェ自動車やそこから分かれたBMWの創業者である、ポルシェ博士は、ガソリン自動車と電気自動車を並行して研究していました。
また、フォード自動車も、T型フォードの時代には電気自動車も販売していました。
ガソリン自動車が、世界の主流となったのは、当時のアメリカなどでは、ただ同然の安価な原油（ガソリン）が大量に調達できたという、経済適事情によるのです。
長い間、電気自動車は忘れ去れていたため、ガソリン自動車に比べて性能が劣ると言うイメージがありますが、エネルギー効率やパワーにおいて、ガソリン自動車よりも優れています。
日本の最先端の研究は、慶応大学で行われていますが、そちらで開発中の８輪自動車は時速３００キロを出しました。もちろん加速性能も素晴らしく、テストドライバーが（ガソリンのレーシングカーと比べても）「素晴らしく速い」とコメントしたのを、テレビでご覧になった方も多いでしょう。
電気自動車には、さらにガソリン自動車には無い優れた特性があります。
まず、モーターを直接車輪に取り付けるため、ミッションなどの駆動伝達系の部品がいらなくなります。このことにより、車内が広くなり、車体が軽くなる上に、故障も少なくなります。（トヨタ・プリウスなどのハイブリッド車も、モーターは車輪に直接ついています。）
また、開発に莫大な費用と時間が必要なエンジンもなくなります。言ってみれば、（電気）自動車は大きな家電製品になるわけです。日本にも、電気自動車の自作クラブがいくつかあるくらい、シンプルな構造なのです。
ガソリン自動車の分野で、中国などのアジア諸国が日本に追いつくのには、５０年くらいかかるかもしれませんが、（家電製品である）電気自動車の分野では、場合によっては数年で追いついてしまうかもしれません。
実際、ガソリン自動車では先進国に太刀打ちできないと考えている中国は、国策として電気自動車の開発・製造を支援しています。北京オリンピックまでに、市内を走るバスをすべて、電気自動車に入れ替える予定です。
また、BYDという中国の世界的リチウムイオン電池のメーカーは、子会社で電気自動車の製造販売を本格的に行っています。リチウムイオン電池の価格が下がれば、ガソリン自動車よりも高性能で価格が安く、しかも環境にやさしい電気自動車が爆発的に普及するでしょう。
ガソリン自動車では独壇場の日本メーカーも、（家電製品）である電気自動車が急速に普及する過程では、その地位を、中国を始めとするアジア諸国に脅かされるかもしれません。
もちろん、発電するのには何らかのエネルギーが必要なわけですが、石炭や天然ガスなどの化石エネルギーは、まだ相当の埋蔵量がありますし、原子力発電も再び脚光を浴びています。
貴重な原油は、化学製品の原料などに集中的に利用し、その他のエネルギーを発電に利用するというのは、今後数十年間のエネルギー政策として、きわめて合理的なはずです。
また、電気自動車の充電は、家庭で十分できるので、ガソリンスタンドも必要なくなり、跡地を有効利用できます。
