＜06ツール・ド・フランス＞第9ステージ フレイレ、ステージ優勝を果たす - フランス

過去に3度世界チャンピオンタイトルを獲得しているのオスカル・フレイレが第5ステージに続き、今年のツール・ド・フランス2勝目をあげた。
はじめて取材に行った2001年のポルトガルで行われた世界選手権で、優勝したのがフレイレだった。その時は2度目の優勝。1999年の1度目はだれも予想しなかった勝利だった。2度目はその実力を世間に認めさせる勝利だった。ベッティーニ、ツァベルを抑えての勝利。
ゴール勝負を観ていたとき、私はフレイレの存在を忘れていた。ベッティーニとツァベルばかり気にしていた。ツァベルは全盛期、ゴーる前ではTTで優勝しいたウルリッヒがツァベルをアシストするシーンがあった。
で、ゴール。自分は「あれ？ 誰が勝った？」って誰が勝ったか確認できなかった。そしたらとなりにいたイタリア人女性が「オスカル！」って。「あーフレイレか！」。フレイレは優勝候補のひとりとして考えていなかった。
ジュニア、U23カテゴリーは単独の逃げが決まっていただけに、スプリント勝負になるとは思っていなかった。だが、結果はスプリント勝負で、フレイレが勝利。このとき、まだまだ見る目がないなと反省し、フレイレは忘れてはいけない存在となった。
第9ステージのゴール前。トム・ボーネン（現世界チャンピオン、写真奥の虹色ジャージ）が好位値につけているも、私が気にしていたのはフレイレだった。ゴール勝負前のフレイレの位置は本当に興味深い。列車を組む訳でもなく、マキュアンほどの爆発力もない。だが勝つ、フレイレ。勝負勘というものがすばらしいと思う。だから世界選手権を3度も制すことができるんだろう。
さて、いよいよツールは山岳ステージに突入。誰が優勝争いに名乗りをあげることになるのだろうか。今回、絶対エースの態勢があるのはフォナックのランディスだけだ。Tモバイルは4人も総合上位に名を連ねているが、どうも誰がエースかしぼり切れないように思える。ともあれ、第10ステージを走ればその辺りが見えてくる。そして翌第11ステージは山頂ゴール。この2日間のピレネーステージは見逃せない。
※ちなみに2001年ポルトガルの世界選手権ロードU23の優勝者はヤロスラフ・ポポヴィッチ
