世界選手権2006 エリート女子ロード
＜06UCIロード世界選手権＞ヴォス 女子ロードレースを制する - オーストリア

19歳が優勝した女子ロード。U23に続き激しいスプリント勝負となった。女子であろうと、ロードレースには変わりがない。今回、日本でも中継がされたので、そう思った人もお多いことだろう。
ジュニア時代に2度アルカンシェルを獲得しているニコル・クック（イギリス）はエリートになってから、勝てそうで勝てないレースが続いていた。若い力として注目をされていて、今回も優勝候補の筆頭だったし、攻めの姿勢をみせ続けた。しかし、勝ったのはさらに若い選手。クックは強いんだけど、がむしゃらすぎる。ロードレースはもっとクレバーさももたいないとダメってことだと思う。
さて、日本勢。まずエースの沖は今回体調を崩していた。レースを走れる状況でなかったということは結果を見ればわかることだ。今シーズンの沖はシーズン序盤の快進撃を評価しなければ行けない。最後の目標となる北京五輪に向けて、まだまだ日本女子のエースだ。
そして、見事に完走を果たした萩原麻由子。鹿屋体育大学の2年生だ。J SPORTSの放送では紹介がなかったそうだが、彼女こそ次期エースとなる存在なのだ。2年前の世界選手権イタリア大会ではジュニアカテゴリーに出場。国際大会の経験もほとんどなかった。日本の女子のレースを考えると、大集団での走行に関して心配されていたが、周りの心配をよそに難なく走りきってしまった。しかも、集団先頭を引くシーンも見られた。
そんな彼女。昨年は1年生ながら学生チャンピオンタイトルを獲得。もう日本にはライバルがいない状況。そして，今年は2年振りに世界選手権に帰ってきて、エリートカテゴリーに出場し、やはりまたあっさりと30位完走を果たした。ゴール後の彼女のコメントは「やっぱり、みんな速くて、自分はまだまだでした」。彼女の中ではこれぐらい走れて当然ということだ。世界でも通用する彼女の力が、今後どこまで伸びるか楽しみだ。
