バッソはなにを追う
＜自転車レース 2006 ジロ・デ・イタリア＞バッソ 第20ステージを制す - イタリア
【アップリカ/イタリア 26日 AFP】自転車レース、第89回ジロ・デ・イタリア（2006 Giro d’Italia）、第20ステージ（トレントからアップリカ間211キロメートル）。チームCSC（Team CSC）のイヴァン・バッソ（Ivan Basso、イタリア）は、6時間51分15秒のタイムでステージ優勝を飾った。これでバッソは、総合タイムを2位以下に9分以上の差をあける87時間37分33秒で総合首位をキープした。(c)AFP/Filippo MONTEFORTE
最後の山岳ステージもバッソがみせてくれた。
はっきり言って、この日のバッソそんなに先を急がなくても、個人総合優勝は確実だった。そんな中、モルティローロで最初に仕掛けたのはバッソだった。
シモーニと2人になってからも、バッソはさらに加速した。すでに勝負はついてた、ライバルたちはすでに置き去りになってた。
それはまるで、ツール7連覇、負けずして引退したランス・アームストロングを追いかけ、追い越せと言わんばかりの走りだった。
バッソは1977年11月26日生まれの28歳。U23の世界選手権で優勝して、期待されてここまできたが、正直時間がかかった。癌を克服したアームストロング（1971年9月18日）が最初にツール・ド・フランスを制したのは27歳のときだ。
2004年ジロ・ディタリアを制したのダミアーノ・クネゴ（1981年9月19日生まれ）。22歳でグランツールを制している。もちろんクネゴもジュニア時代に世界選手権を制して期待されていたが、予想以上に若くしてジロを制し、一躍スター選手となり、グランツールを狙うトップ選手の仲間入りをした。
バッソとクネゴを比べると年齢差は4歳。バッソはクネゴに遅れること2年で、やっとグランツール制覇となる。やはり待ちに待った勝利といえるだろう。
そして、バッソはいまある限りの強さをみせたのではないだろうか。自分にはまだ力がある。ただ総合優勝するだけでなく、いまはなきランス、そして今いるライバルたちに対してのアピールのようだった。
今日はジロ最終日。ミラノでゴールする。3週間にわたる戦いが終わる。
次のグランツールは7月1日スタートのツール・ド・フランス。今度はどんな物語が描かれるのか。

ジロも気付けばもう20ステージ。 21ステージは総合には影響しないだろうから実質的な総合争いはこのステージで決まりますね。 最後の決戦にふさわしく、レース中盤には今年のジロのチーマ・コッピがあり、それをずっと下った後は最も厳しいというモルティローロを越えて、山岳ポイントこそないけど、上ってゴール。 序盤の山岳ポイントはガラーテが先頭で通過して山岳賞を獲得。 その後レースは集団に戻りモルティローロへ。 集団をサウニエルデュバルが引くとどんどん脱落していく選手が出てきて先頭集団が小さくなっていく。 さらにバッソが中盤あたりからペースを上げ始めると更に選手は切れていき、シモーニだけがピッタリとマーク。 そのまま2人で山頂を越えて下りへ。 引き離されたクネゴやサヴォルデッリは下りで差を取り戻したいところなのに今ひとつといった感じ。 最後の上りでも協調体制か？と思ったらバッソがペースを上げて、とうとうシモーニも脱落。 ゴールでは生まれたばかりの赤ちゃんの写真を掲げるバッソなのでした。 強いバッソはこれで3勝目！ マリアローザに相応しい戦いぶりですねぇ。
