■いいペットホテルがなかなかない日本
う〜む、恐るべしはやはりアメリカ…
ペットホテルは日本でもかなり増えてきましたが
どこも経営内容はきびしく、なかなか儲かっているという話は
聞きません。動物病院が入院設備のとなりなどに設けている
ペットホテルは、なにかあっても病院だから安心と思う飼い主も
多いわけですが、環境的にはあまりおすすめできるような
ものではありません。だってあなた、なんてたって病院ですから
消毒液のにおいはするし、他に病気の動物がヒンヒン言ってたり
するわけですから、預けられる方にとってはストレス以外の
何物でもない。病院が好きな動物なんていませんし、猫なんか
逆に具合が悪くなってしまうかも…。
■ペットホテルは場所やサービス内容しだい
↓
預けるなら、ちゃんとしたペットホテルだと思うのですが
スチール製の檻を二段重ねにして、ほとんどそこに閉じこめておき
日に２回だけ出してスタッフが散歩させるというところも
なんだかなあ…と思ってしまいます。何かあっても責任は持てません
みたいな文書にサインさせられるところもあるし、本当に散歩に
行っているのか、どれぐらいの距離と時間、行っているのか
なんてわからないし、これこれこういうサービスをやってますと
言うのは「それ以外のことはやらない」と言っているのと
変わらないように思いますしね。たとえば、犬や猫たちがなにか
不満とか身体の不調とかを訴えていても、それを飼い主と同じ視点で
見て対処してくれるかどうかなんてわかりませんし、スタッフは
夜になれば電気を消して、鍵をかけ帰ってしまうわけですから。
■日本にはさらに上をゆくホテルも…
最近はそんな声に応えて、ほとんど家のリビングと同じような
環境で、スタッフたちが24時間常駐で犬の世話をし、どんな状況
だったかを時間ごとに写真付きの日誌やブログにアップして
見せてくれるところも出てきましたし、携帯にいまいまの状況を
定期配信してくれるところもあるようです。実際にそういうホテルを
見せてもらうと、やはり超セレブな常連さんの犬が中心で
なかなか予約が取れないほど混み合っています。そこまでやって
ビジネスとして成り立つかどうかは知りませんが、そういうホテルの
オーナーさんに会うと、どうも商売うんぬんよりも「犬のために
何かしたい」「やる以上は理想に近いものじゃないと駄目」という
こだわりの人たちですよね。こうした志はなかなか素晴らしいし
いいと思うんですけど、利用料もそれなりになるのが玉にキズ
ってことですよね。当然の話ですけど…

■犬たちはそれを快適と思っているか？
ペッツマート・ペッツホテルは、2010年までに240カ所の
チェーン店展開を考えているそうですが、やっぱりアメリカ人の
考えることは違うよなあ。規模もすごいし、こんなことをビジネス
にしてしまうという発想も、日本人にはなかなか思いつきません。
なにより、やる前からそんな需要がなかったらどうするの
とリスクばかりを考えてしまいますよね。
ホテル内には、ペットをテーマにした番組が観られるプライベート
スイートルームや吹き抜けの部屋などがあって、いかにも
アメリカ人の考えそうな施設だと思いますけど、本当に差額室料を
払うほど、犬たちはそれを快適と思っているのでしょうか？
物珍しさや話題性に惹かれて一度は利用してみても、気まぐれな
日本人のユーザーをリピーターにするのは難しいような気がします。
我が家の場合は、家の鍵を預けて１日に二度来てもらい、
ごはんと散歩をしてくれるペットシッターさんにお願いしてます。
（ところで「犬のデイキャンプ（Doggie Day Camp）」って
何なんでしょうね？）
