■争えば争うだけイメージダウン
チュネルのNo.5にドッグ・ペリニヨン、チューイ・ヴィトンですか。
これがみんなドッググッズのブランド名とは、アメリカにも駄洒落が好きな
オジサンがいるようですね。LVMHグループにしてみれば、世界最高級の
ブランドを扱っているのに、犬のおもちゃに自社のブランドに似た名前を
付けて売られたのではたまらないということなのでしょうが、
たかが犬のおもちゃにそんなに目くじらを立てなくても…
と思ってしまいますよね。こういうのは、必死になればなるだけ
かえってイメージダウンになるような気もします。
■日本でもアメリカでも飼い主の考えることは同じ

それにしても、アメリカでもペットグッズはけっこういい商売に
なるようです。当事者の一人であるPamela Reeder氏は、
この裁判で2006年度の売り上げが100万ドル近く落ち込むと
言っていることを考えると、このドッグブランドは１億2000万円
以上の売り上げがあるということですものね。
日本では今、ペット用品（とくにドッググッズ、ドッグファッション）の
市場は花盛りで、ありとあらゆるブランドが雨後の竹の子のように
乱立し、ペットショップや百貨店のペットコーナーの陳列棚を
賑わしています。あと、実店舗を持たないネット上だけの
オンラインショップの興隆ぶりもめざましく、日本中の飼い主たちが
日々ＰＣを叩いてシーズンごとの新作を追い求め、自分の愛犬たちを
着飾らせてブログなどで紹介したりしています。
まあ日本でもアメリカでも、ペット愛好家の考えることは
似たり寄ったりということでしょうか。
■ドッグファッションの隆盛は豊かになったことの証し
私は出発点がファッション誌の編集なので、こうしたムーブメントを
興味深く観察していますが、ファッション誌をやっていた27年前
から考えると、ほんとに隔世の感がありますねー。当時は欧米の
ブランドがこぞって日本に上陸してきた最初の隆盛期でしたが、
ほとんどが商社を介して流通していましたからまだまだ価格が高く、
現地での売値と日本での販売価格には何倍もの開きがあったものです。
（私は、当時の日本で売られているブランドを全部調べて一覧表にし、
現地価格と日本での販売価格の比較表をつくったことがあります）
それが今は、犬のファッションにこれだけたくさんのブランドがある
という時代ですからね〜。日本もほんとに豊かになったものです。
■よりよい物、より高価な物をとニーズはエスカレート
ペットジャーナリストなんて名乗っていると、「ペットビジネスは
今後も拡大すると思いますか？」なんて質問をよくされますが、
まあ多少の世代交代や淘汰はあるものの、それが一時のブームのように
急速にしぼんでいってしまうとは考えられないでしょう。
人間の欲望は限りのないもので、いったん愛犬に着せた服を脱がす
ことなどありえませんし、一度そうしたサイクルにはまったら
よりよい物、より品質の確かな物、より高価な物をと
エスカレートしていくのが世の常です。
○○ちゃんがブログで着ていたセーター最高にかわいかった、
うちの子にはもっといいのを着せてあげたい！ということですね。
■ペットブームはブームで終わらない
マスコミは、これまでのように第○次ペットブームは何年ぐらいまでで
次第に（あるいは急速に）衰退していくだろうと考えがちですが、
犬も猫もいったん飼ったら15年も生きるわけですから、そうこうする
うちにふたたび山が来てしまうだろうというのが私の見方です。
だって、今はお隣さんもお向かいさんも犬を飼っていて、楽しそうに
散歩をしている姿をしじゅう見かけているわけですよ。
おとうさん、うちも犬が欲しいよ〜！と、子どもが言い始めるのは
そんなに遠い日ではないのです。また、犬を連れて入れるカフェや
ホテルや旅館なども急速に増え、ドッグランがあちこちの公園内にでき、
犬と住める集合住宅も見る間に増えてきました。今はペットとともに
快適に暮らせる環境やインフラが急速に整いつつある。
こうしたことから、ペットブームはもうたんなるブームでは終わらない
と考えるのが普通でしょう。
まあ今から参入しても、ペットビジネスで大儲けできるかどうかは
知りませんが、やるなら中国や韓国、アメリカ、ヨーロッパ、
オーストラリアまでを市場と考えて、大きく勝負に出るというのも
おもしろいでしょうね。じつは日本のドッグファッションは今、
世界の最先端を行っていると私個人は思いますから。
