クリスマスで賑わうショッピング・モールにサーカス犬登場 - 香港

■香港には犬のサーカスがお似合い？
またまた中国の話題。最近はペット（中でも犬）の話となると、
どうも中国がダントツに先行しているようです。それにしても
犬のサーカスは客寄せ効果としては最高でしょうね。
こんなことを言うと、叱られるかもしれませんが、香港には
犬のサーカスはけっこうお似合いのような気もします。
そういう雑多な文化を包含しているからこそ香港でしょうから。
■素晴らしかったボリショイサーカスの犬たち

私は学生時代の終わりにシベリア鉄道を使って冬のロシア（旧ソ連）
を旅したことがありますが、このときモスクワでボリショイサーカスに行き、
犬数十頭を使ったサーカス芸を見ました。どうだったかといえば、
それはそれは素晴らしかった！ 当時は犬にそんな危険な荒技をさせるなんて
動物虐待ではないかと批判する意識もなく、美しく着飾った小型犬たちが
丸いリンク上を所狭しと駆け回る姿に、大きな拍手を送ったものです。
■過酷な訓練と矯正によってしか得られない高度な芸
当時の私は、犬に芸を仕込むのがそんなに難しいことはなく、
犬はプロの訓練士が命じればあのように簡単に芸をするもの
だとばかり思ってましたし、火の輪くぐりも高い平均台も
へっちゃらなのだろうと思っていました。
まあ考えてみれば、そんな簡単な芸ならわざわざお金を取って
サーカスで見せるはずもありませんよね〜。過酷な訓練と
高さや火を恐れないようにする矯正によってしか
あんな高度な技は修得できないでしょうから、あれはまごうことなき
「動物虐待」といえると思います（犬だけじゃなく、サーカスに
働くすべての動物にもいえることじゃないかという声も
聞こえてくるような気がしますが…）。
■犬をステージから降ろしなさい！
こうした犬のサーカスは、かつてはヨーロッパの国々でも頻繁に
行われていたようです。イギリスの獣医さんの半生記である
『バスター先生と小さな仲間たち』（実業之日本社）を
翻訳したとき、ナオミ・ジェイコブというイギリスのご婦人が
舞台上で芸をする犬たちを見て、「犬をステージから
降ろしなさい！」と大声で叫んだという下りを原版で読み、
ああ、やっぱりイギリスでも50〜60年代にはそんなことが
ふつうに行われていたんだなぁと改めて思いました。
今はもう「ステージから降ろしなさい！」という声の方が
主流でしょうから、犬のサーカスが見られるのは香港か
ロシア（はもうやってないかな？）のように思います。
■市民を取り締まるばかりのポリスなら要らない！
ところで同じ中国でも北京では、｢一匹政策｣なるものが実施され、
この11月から警官の戸別訪問による飼い主への警告が開始された
という話が11月29日のAFP BB Newsでも報じられていました。
こちらは、北京市内８区の家庭の飼い犬を１頭に制限し、
市中心部では大型犬の飼育を禁じるというものですが、当然のごとく
愛犬家からは怒りの声が殺到しているそうです。広い中国での話。
北京と香港では、犬に対する地域事情もだいぶ違うようです。
それにしても、いま日本では動物虐待を取り締まるアニマルポリスを
地方自治体の中につくろうという声がありますが、いきなり
無茶苦茶な法律をつくって、それを取り締まるために警察が動くと
いうようなポリスなら誰も歓迎しませんよねー！
