■アメリカにもある動物の調達屋
おそらく日本では公開されないだろうと思いますが、
動物虐待をテーマにしたドキュメンタリー作品が
アメリカでは話題になっているようです。
「Dealing Dogs」というのがそのタイトルですが、
ようは犬の調達屋の暗躍を描いた映画のようですね。
■本当にやめてしまってよいのか？
アメリカには、こうした動物実験（とくに犬の）に対して
猛烈に反対を唱える団体があるのですが、じゃあ動物実験を
本当にやめてしまってよいものかというと、これはなかなか
難しい問題といえそうです。というのは、動物実験を
必要とする場所というのは、医療研究所や製薬会社、獣医大学、
あるいはその付属病院などで、そこでは人間用のクスリや
医療関係、獣医学関係の研究が行われているということですね。
あのつぶらな瞳をした、人間を心から信頼しきっている犬たちを
実験に使って死に至らしめてしまうなんて、なんて可哀想な
ことをするんだ！と、感情的にはそう言いたいところですが
では実際に動物実験なしに、クスリの安全性が確かめられるのか
獣医学生たちの外科手術のトレーニングができるのかとなると
本当のところどうなのかな…と口ごもってしまいますねー。
■技術力の低下を招くおそれも…
じっさい、2000年あたりを機にアメリカの獣医大学では
生きた動物を使った実習をボイコットする動きが起こり、
今は外科手術の練習台に実験動物を使えなくなっていますし、
日本の大学でもそれができなくなる傾向にあるようです。
しかしながら、もちろんそうしたことによる技術力の低下を憂う
声もあって、いったいどうしたらいいのかは霧の中という感じ…。

■「絶対禁止」はわかりやすいけど…
問題は動物実験の是非というよりも、その動物たちが
どこから連れてこられて、実験に使われたあとどうなるのか
といったことにあるように個人的には思います。
聞くところによると、かつては保健所や動物管理センターで
殺処分にされるペットを引き取ったり、ペットショップや
繁殖屋の犬舎で売れ残った動物を安く引き取ったり、愛護団体を
騙った専門業者が「里親を探す」といつわって集めた犬猫を
有料で引き取ったりするということが行われていたそうで、
そういう話であれば、これは「絶対禁止」で異論を挟む余地はない
と思うのですが…。
