国内携帯キヤリアのスマートフォンはW-ZERO3に勝てるのか？
NTTドコモ、スマートフォン「hTc Z」を近日発売 - 東京
【東京 20日 AFP】NTTドコモ（NTT DoCoMo）は、台湾の携帯電話メーカー、HTC（High-Tech Computer）社製のPDA型スマートフォン「hTc Z」を7月末に発売する。この製品は、Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PCを搭載し、Samsungスタック400MHz CPU、2.8インチカラー液晶、およびスライド式QWERTY キーボードを備える。写真は20日、東京の「ワイヤレスジャパン2006」展示会で公開された「hTc Z」。(c)AFP/YOSHIKAZU TSUNO
今まで、日本ではポピュラーにならなかったスマートフォンだが、ウィルコムのW-ZERO3のヒットによって、徐々に裾野を広げつつある。これを傍観するわけにもいかないためか、NTTドコモからもスマートフォンが投入される。
＠スマートフォンとは
電話帳、スケジュール、メモなどを管理するデジタルガジェットをPDAと呼ぶが、このPDAのような機能を持つ携帯電話を欧米では「スマートフォン」と呼ぶ。日本の多くの携帯電話もPDA的な機能は持つが、その機能性はPDAやスマートフォンには及ばない。大きな違いは扱えるファイル形式の汎用性やディスプレイの広さだろう。スマートフォンは一様にPDA並の大型液晶を備え、大量の情報を見やすくしている。
＠PDAから電話になったTreo
さて、一口にスマートフォンと言っても、その形状はさまざまである。PDAで有名なPalm社は、現在、PalmOne社と名前を変え、キーボードつきのPalmPilotに携帯電話機能を追加したような形状のスマートフォン「Treo」を発売している。ユーザーインターフェースもPalmPilotのものを受け継いでいるので、まさに電話になったPDAだ。
＠スマートフォンに力を入れるノキア
映画「セイント」のなかで主人公のセイントが超小型のノートPCのようなもので、メールをやりとりするシーンがあるが、これはノキアのスマートフォンだ。ノキアは超小型のノートPCにも見えるようなタイプのスマートフォンをいくつも発売している。キーボードつきなので、よりノートPCに近い使い勝手で使える利便性がある。
＠日本国内のW-ZERO3のヒット
昨年、OSにWindowsMobileを搭載し、キーボードを搭載してまるで超小型のノートPCのような形状のPHS端末「W-ZERO３」が登場して、ヒット作となった。日本国内でスマートフォンがヒットとなったのは初めてではないだろうか？ W-ZERO3はそれ自身でメールやWebが使える以外に、PCから接続することもできる。そして、その通信料金はごく安い。近く、小型化したesモデルも登場する予定で、これも売れそうだ。
＠今後の国内のスマートフォンは？
そんななかNTTドコモがあらたにスマートフォンを国内発売するわけだが、これがW-ZERO3に対抗するのは難しいのではないだろうか？ それは単純に通信料金が高いためだ。国内キヤリアのスマートフォンがこれまでイマイチヒットしなかった原因は、単純にパケット料金が高すぎたためではないかと思う。
＠PC通信を考えて欲しい
最近は携帯電話自体のパケット通信料は定額にはなったが、PCをつなげた場合の通信料はバカ高い。これが解決されない限り、携帯キヤリアのスマートフォンがW-ZERO3に対抗することは難しいのではないかと思う。少なくとも、僕ならPC接続のためには買わないだろう。
