ビデオに大きく舵を取るアップル
【東京 14日 AFP】アップルコンピュータ（Apple Computer）は14日、都内のApple Storeで、新型iPodを発表した。画面が60％明るくなり、最大3.5時間のビデオ再生が可能になったほか、連続再生時の曲間の間隙をなくし、さらにiTunesからダウンロードしたゲームも楽しめるようになった。日本市場での販売価格は、30GBモデルが2万9800円、80GBモデルが4万2800円。写真は、アップルストアに展示された新型iPod。(c)AFP/TOSHIFUMI KITAMURA
新世代のiPodは、ビデオ再生可能時間が長くなったり、ゲームが遊べるようになったり、総合的なメディアプレイヤーに成長した。アップルはこの第5世代iPodとiTunesStoreで従来の音楽中心から本格的なビデオ配信ビジネスへと大きくカバー範囲を広げる。今後はiTunesStoreで映画を購入できるようになるのだ。
＠エンターテイメントの幅を広げた新世代iPod
新しいiPodではビデオの再生可能時間が３時間半となり、普通の映画を１本再生できるようになった。液晶画面も明るさを増し、より動画鑑賞向きになった。iTunesストアでゲームを購入して遊べるようになったのも大きな違いだ。現時点ではテトリスやパックマンなど、ごくシンプルなゲームが9点ほど買える。現在のゲームの価格は600円で携帯電話ゲームと比較すればやや高いが、携帯ゲーム機と比較すれば安い。より幅広いエンターテイメント端末になったわけだ。
＠DVDレベルの動画配信を開始
従来、iTunesMusicStoreでは音楽PVを中心として320×240ドットの動画を販売していたのだが、今後は640×480ドットのより高精細な映画コンテンツを販売していく。北米ではすでに販売が開始されており、今後、日本のiTunesStoreでも販売される予定だ。iPodの小さな液晶では320×240ドットで十分なので、これはPC上で動画コンテンツを見ることを意識したもの。DVDの720×480ドットとほぼ変わらないので、ニアDVDコンテンツと言える。
＠家電をも取り込む戦略
アップルの戦略はこれで終わりではない。2007年初頭に販売予定のiTVというSTBがそのキーとなる。無線LANでPCから映像を受信し、接続したTVに映像を表示できるのだ。これは音楽配信でも使った家電をも取り込む戦略だ。購入したコンテンツをiPod、PC、TVのどれでも見られる戦略で、アップルは大きく動画販売ビジネスに乗り出した。動画のオンライン販売だけでなく家電をも取り込んだ、この電撃作戦は大きなインパクトを持っている。
＠iPodは総合メディアポータルになる？
ポータブルオーディオプレイヤー市場はマイクロソフトのZuneの参入などにより、よりホットになることが予想されるが、ビデオメディアをも扱えるアップルiPodは大きな優位性を持つだろう。それどころか、家電をも含めたビデオメディア配信インフラをアップルが押さえてしまった場合、今後のメディアビジネスへの影響は大きなものとなる。iPodというポータブルデバイスがメディアへのポータルとなる未来があるのかも知れない。
