オロチは光岡自動車にとって必然的な産物
【東京 3日 AFP】光岡自動車（Mitsuoka Motor）は2日、都内で記者会見を行い、新型スポーツカー「オロチ（大蛇、Orochi）」を発表した。オロチはトヨタ自動車（Toyota Motor）製のV6エンジン（排気量3300cc）をミッドシップに搭載しており、400台の完全限定受注生産となる。納車は2007年1月からで、価格は1050万円。写真は、記者会見で披露されたオロチ。(c)AFP/TOSHIFUMI KITAMURA
ユニークな自動車作りで知られるミツオカ自動車が、1050万円という国産車では類のない価格の高性能スポーツカー「オロチ」を発売する。国内の自動車市場ではスポーツカー冬の時代という話もあるなかの発売であるが、オロチで光岡自動車は何を目指しているのだろう。
＠光岡自動車とは？
ミツオカはホンダ、日産、トヨタのような大企業と対局にある小さな自動車会社。これまではトヨタ、日産、ホンダなどの市販車をベースにしてカスタマイズした自動車がミツオカの主な製品だった。外装から内装までカスタマイズされ、高いオリジナリティを持つ製品作りがミツオカ自動車の持ち味だ。小さな会社だから小規模な自動車を作るのではなく、あくまでスペシャリティな自動車を目指してきた。そして、主にオールドブリティッシュなテイストの製品が多い。
＠オロチとは？
このミツオカ自動車が数年前から、じっくりと仕上げてきたスポーツカーが「オロチ」だ。この数年、モーターショーに参考出品し、スタイルも、中身も試行錯誤をくり返して練り上げられている。エンジンはトヨタから提供されたものをチューンしているが、これはレクサスに搭載されている3.3リッターV6で、ポルシェカレラなど1000万円級スポーツカーを相手にしても不足ない。このエンジンをミッドシップにしているのもスペシャルだ。
＠歴史的には珍しくない手作りの自動車作り
自動車の長い歴史を持つイギリスにはさまざまな自動車メーカーがある。そもそも自動車の発達のなかではさまざまな自動車メーカーが登場しては消えていった。大量生産的な大企業に対して、ロータスのように手作りで自動車を作っていた自動車メーカーも多い。光岡のようにベースとなる自動車をカスタマイズしてスペシャルに仕上げるメーカーはイギリスでは「コーチビルダー」、イタリアではカロッツェリアと呼ばれる。
＠ミツオカにとってスーパースポーツカー作りは必然的
手作りで自動車をカスタマイズするということは、必然的に生産性が低いということと、その結果となる自動車が高価になるということだ。スペシャリティカーを作り、プレミアムを稼がないと収益が保てない。その意味では、その究極と言えるスーパースポーツカー作りの領域に踏み込むのは光岡のようなビジネスモデルの企業には必然と言える。そして、当然、このオロチの正否が光岡自動車の未来を大きく左右することになるだろう。
