マイクロソフトはOSも提供するIT企業を目指す？

マイクロソフトがノベルと提携し、ノベルのLinuxとWindowsにある程度の互換性を持たせるという。Windowsの新バージョンVISTAの登場を直前にして、マイクロソフトはなぜ、そんな動きをするのだろうか。そして、今後、何をめざそうとしているのだろうか？
＠ネットワークで有名なノベル
ノベルはもともとはネットワークの会社だ。Windows3.1の登場する以前、PC間のネットワークソフトに関して、もっともシェアが大きな会社の１つだった。それがWindowsがネットワークを標準的にサポートしたことで、必然性を失い、じょじょにネットワーク関連でのシェアを下げていった。そして、他のビジネスを探すことを余儀なくされた。その１つがOSだ。
＠実はOSメーカーとして長い歴史が
ノベルはかつてはDOSも作っていた。DR-DOSと呼ばれるものだ。DOSはWindows以前のマイクロソフトの主力OSであり、これと互換性を持つ物をノベルは作っていた。OSの主流がWindowsに移るとともにDR-DOSも存在意義を無くし、消滅することとなった。そして、時代の流れに乗って今ではLinuxを提供しているというわけだ。ノベルのOSビジネスは歴史が長いのである。
＠今後はLinuxとの共存を選ぶ？
マイクロソフトはそんなノベルにアプローチしているわけだが、なぜ、VISTA登場以前にそんなことをするのだろう？ 欧米ではLinuxのシェアが意外に大きいため、歩み寄りを見せておいたほうが有利ということはあるだろう。LinuxがメインのオフィスにWindowsの入る余地を与えるには、互換性を持たせるしかない。ユーザーにVISTAを選択させるためには、多くのカードを持っているほうが有利だ。殲滅できないなら、共存というのは孫子の兵法にもある。
＠さらに先のビジネスモデル
おそらくマイクロソフトはもっと先のビジネスを考えているだろう。もはや、OS事業だけを無理押しする必要がないから、敵と手を組む余裕があるわけだ。そのビジネスとは言うまでもなくWebサービス。Live.comでMSオフィスすらもオンラインで提供し、ユーザーポータルとして確立することだ。WebサービスにはWindowsもLinuxもない。敵はYahooやGoogleである。IE7やVISTAはユーザーを自社のサイトに呼び込むポータルと考えていい。最近はAV企業じみてきたアップルと同様、OSも提供するIT企業がマイクロソフトの目的ではないだろうか？
