＜F1＞第3戦を行うオーストラリアの空をマシン型のバルーンが飛行
【メルボルン/オーストラリア 1日 AFP】3月30日から4月2日まで行われる今季のF1第3戦・オーストラリアGP（Australian Formula One Grand Prix）の開催を控え、マシン型のバルーンがメルボルン市の上空に打ち上げられた。(c)AFP
オーストラリアでは、F1開催を記念して、バルーンが打ち上げられたそうだ。日本でも何かイベントをやって欲しい。じゃないと、気がついたらジャパンF1が終わってるんですよね、最近。
「F1は人間の限界」
F1は体力的にも運動能力的にも、かなり人間の限界に迫っているスポーツだ。シューマッハのあのゴツい体を見れば、単に運転のうまいニイちゃんがいきなり優勝しちゃうなんて、ありえないよね、というのも納得できる。F1ドライバーのトップの人たちは、みんな本当にオリンピックでも出られそうな体力なんじゃないかな。
「技術の進歩は速い」
人間の能力よりも遙かに速いのが技術の進化。その技術の進化により、速くなり過ぎちゃったり、安全になりすぎちゃったりすると、おもしろくないので、常にレギュレーションが変えられ、必要とされるマシンスペックが変わる。僕が小学生の頃は「サッカーカー」というのが登場した。これはフロントタイヤと操縦席の間にヘリのようにプロペラを回してダウンフォースを稼ぐというマシンだった。さすがにその走行安定性は凄く、チーム２台で連勝して、すぐに違反になって消えてしまった。
「楽になっても楽にならない」
最近はギアもハンドルのボタンでアップ、ダウンを操作して、クラッチがなくなった。これは市販車でもトヨタのMR-Sとかフェラーリとかでも採用されている。ハンドルから手を離さなくていいのとクラッチ操作がいらないので、ハンドル操作に注力できて、グッド。しかし、それもみんなが使うので、特に利点にはならない。そんな技術の先端を取り入れたマシン同士が戦うのがF1だ。便利になっても、より高い次元で戦うことになるので、ドライバーが楽になることはない。
「ロボットF1は可能か？」
最近のF1はコンピュータ化も激しく、もはや、ピットからのコントロールで普通に走らせることもできるのではないか？ とも聞く。それならば、いっそリモコンF1というのを新しく開催したらどうだろう？ 少なくとも、事故でドライバーが死ぬことがないという利点がある。
「それでも主役は人間であり続けるだろう」
しかし、それでは人は興奮しないのだろう。一つ間違えば、大破し、炎上し、命を落とすスリル。人の命を引き替えでなくてはレースはもりあがらないだろう。命をかけているからこそ、F1レーサーはヒーローで、その勇者見たさに人が集まるのだ。F1レーサーはゲームチャンピオンとは、賭けているものの重みが違う。そう、人はいつでも、自分の賭けているリスクと同じだけ、大きな対価を手にする可能性があるのだ。
