日本が大ピンチを乗り越え「銀」を守った。
シンクロナイズドスイミングのＷ杯最終日は１７日、横浜国際プールで五輪種目のチームを行い、日本はテクニカルルーティンで同点だったスペインを、フリールーティンで突き放し、銀メダルを獲得。９７年Ｗ杯から続く世界２位の座を守った。
フリールーティンに出場したエース鈴木絵美子（２４＝ミキハウス）は出場４種目すべてでメダルを獲得し、３大大会では史上２人目の快挙を達成。ロシアが大会４連覇と３大大会初の全種目制覇を果たした。
大粒の涙が、乗り越えた苦しみの大きさを示していた。フリールーティン演技順、最後の日本。死力を尽くした４分を終えた８人に、得点が発表される。
「９・９、９・８…」。演技を終えていたスペインを明らかに上回り、世界２位の座を守りきった。
２つのピンチを乗り越えた。得意のテクニカルルーティンで同調性にミスが出て、スペインと同点。「正直、苦しい」と金子正子シンクロ委員長。１０年ぶり３位転落の危機。しかし試合中にもかかわらず午後から３時間に及ぶ猛練習でチームは団結。
さらに、入水時には原田が足を滑らせ、プールサイドで右太腿を負傷するアクシデント。それでも耐えて、計３度の力業をこなした。「焦ってしまったけど、みんなが隊形にはまるように待っていてくれて集中できた」とチームワークを強調。
「シンクロはランキングを獲ってなんぼ。銀を守ったのは大きい」と金子委員長。２位にいるからこそ世界一は目指せる。同一大会で初めて４個のメダルを獲得したエース鈴木絵美子は「デュエットで負けたので、絶対挽回したいと思っていた」と満足感を漂わせた。
芸術性で１０点を並べたロシアが、圧倒的な強さで全種目制覇したが、日本もがんばって優勝争いを演じ「金」をぜひ狙ってほしい。
