■あと何日ですか

フランスには「苦痛研究所」というところがあるのですね
人間にとって「苦痛」とは何でしょうか
Ａさんは「痛み」
Ｂさんは「有余る時間」
そしてＣさんは「残された時間」
「苦痛」の感じ方は人、それぞれでしょうから一概に何ともいえませんが
私は「何も感じない、考えていない時間」が「苦痛」です。
みなさんの「苦痛」とは、どんなことでしょうか？
私は夢の中で友人にこう語っていました。
「あと、何日生きられるか？という残された時間を数えるのでな
く、この先の人生を楽しかったと思えるような人生にしたい」と
なぜか、私は現在住んでいるマンションではなく、一軒家のドアを閉めながら
言うのです。
周りは田んぼ。
山の中の一軒家。
遊びに来てくれた友人に私は、帰る間際にそう、つぶやきました。
そして目を覚ましました。
父がこの世から去ったちょうど1週間前、主治医に呼ばれ、
こう言われました。「あと、数日でしょう。」
正直言って、こう言われるとは思っていませんでした。
『余命3ヶ月とか半年とか聞いたことあるけど、数日って
何日のこと？』心の中で思いました。
「先生、数日って何日のことですか？？」思わず、聞いて
しまった私。
「今日の夜、急変するかもしれない。
それとも1週間先かもしれない。
ハッキリしたことはわかりませんが、あと数日でしょう」と。
病室に帰ってから、怖くなりました。
『数日って。。夜、急変？ちょっと待ってよ。数日って何のことなの！』
病室にいた父の姿はだるそうでした。
そして寝ていました。
『このまま、目が覚めなかったらどうしよう』
私は少しでも父の傍にいたいと思い、子供達が学校に行っている
間、毎日看護に行って家の用事が終えると、また夜、病院に
行きました。夜は母と兄が交代で泊まりをしていました。
食欲がなくなってきた父。点滴で栄養をとっている。
毎日の一分一秒がとても貴重に思えた数日でした。
亡くなる２日前までずっと痛みに耐えていた父。
主治医や私達の話しには耳を貸さず、モルヒネを最後まで
拒否しつづけた理由。
看護師さんが「患者さんにもよりますが、『痛み』を生きている証
と感じ、薬を拒否する人がいます。お父さんはそうなのかも
しれませんね。。。」
私はこの時、「この世で痛み苦しんでる姿を見るのが
一番、嫌だ。」とハッキリ思いました。
目に見える傷があるとそこが痛いのね と 考えることが
出来ますが目に見えない傷みはわからない。
そして父も一言も「痛い」と言わない。
だけど、痛みに耐えているのはわかる。
父の気持ちを尊重し、このままでいるべきなのか
それとも、父の気持ちを無視して、モルヒネを打ってもらうか
父が家にいたころ「モルヒネは最後の最後で使う」と私に筆談で
話したことがありました。
自分の病気を調べ尽くし、自分の身体が今後、どうなっていくの
かわかっていたのでしょうか
残り少ないとわかっていたのでしょうか
元気な頃に筆談で今後のことを２人っきりで話したことが
ありました。
その父の思いを、私の思いを話し合い、その気持ちにそって
最後まで父を看取ることが出来るか 不安でした。
そして「数日」と言われ、日に日に、衰弱していく父を見ながら
「どうするべきなのか」と本当に悩みました。
現在は患者に病気を告知して治療体制を確認して行うことが
当たり前のことみたいなのですが、
父は自分の病気も熟知していましたし、薬もこちらから指定する
ほどでした。
多分、主治医も看護師さんも手を焼いたことでしょう。
だけど「絶対に人に左右されない」父は自分の言ったことを実行
したのです。
看護師さんが言ってた言葉を思い出しました。
「痛み」を生きている証に感じること
もしかしたら そうだったのかもしれません
弱音を吐かない父でしたので、
本当のことはわかりませんが、
主治医にも言われたように「この段階でモルヒネを使わないのは
信じられない。」
「お父さんは普通の人が感じることと違うのかもしれない」 と。
主治医がわからなくて、私達がどうやって父の痛みがわかるんだ。
なんなんだよー！！
どうすれば苦痛から開放してあげられるのか
父の苦痛と私達が感じる苦痛は違うのか
頭の中がパニックになりました。
「決断」するのは本当に難しいと感じました。
亡くなる1日半前（正確に言うと）にモルヒネを使い
昏睡状態に陥った父。
「もう山には登らなくていいんだよ。お父さんは登りきった。」
気持ちの良い空気に触れて 澄み渡る空を見上げて
ひとやすみ しようよ
美味しいおにぎりをほうばって ひとやすみしたら
一緒に昼寝をしようか
ちゃんと起こしてあげるよ
帰りの電車に間に合うように
