「今はホームページですよ」と会う人ごとに言われ、いまいち作る理由もわからぬまま劇団のホームページを作ったのが数年前。去年あたりから「今はブログですよ」と会う人ごとに言われて「やりませんか」の声にのりこうして、「フォトでブログ。だからフォログ」などと何年か先振り返ったら己を呪うであろう安易なタイトルをつけ、はじめた「ブログ」。来月の公演に向けて一刻も早く台本を仕上げねばならぬ時期なのにもかかわらず今回で３回目。いまだ「ブログ」の意味がわからぬままである。コメントをいただいてもどこでどうお返事をすればいいのか、うろうろしたままお返事もせず。なのでここでお礼をしよ。コメントをいただいた方、どうもありがとうございます。
さて。子供というのは、絶望を抱えてもはけ口を知らぬものである。大人は「子供はすぐ忘れる」とよく言うけれどそうでもない。自分を思い返してみても、大人並みに引きずりもしたし、それなりに眠れぬ夜もあった。ただそこは、大人と子供は時間のスパンが違うので(子供の１年というのはとてつもなく長い)、同じ時間軸においては語れないというだけのことである。しかし、いくらはけ口がないからとゆって、そのまま耐え忍ぶというのはあまりにも過酷である。過酷であるから、それぞれ「しのぎ方」を工夫する。
僕の「しのぎ方」は近所の公園に住みついていたホームレスであった。絶望を抱えると僕は、ブランコに腰掛け「あのホームレスは実は宇宙人で地球に１人置き去りにされているのだ」とか「戦争中(いつのかはともかく)この場所で子供をなくしそれ以来ずっとここで喪に服している(もちろんそんな単語はその当時使わなかったけれど)のだ」とかいずれは「劇を作る人」になる子供ならではの空想力を駆使しては「あのおじさんに比べたら僕はまだまし」と、自分を慰めていたものである。ま、実際には、２日に１度は仲間らと楽しそうに酒盛りをし、彼女もおり、ずいぶん楽しそうなホームレスだったのだけれど。
「マイ・ライフ・アズ・ア・ドッグ」という映画がある。その中の主人公の少年がこれとまったく同じことをする。ソビエトがライカ犬をロケットに載せて宇宙飛行の実験をしているニュースを見て、つらいことがあるたびに少年は思う「あのライカ犬に比べたら僕なんかまだましだ」と。どうやらあの対処法は万国共通のものらしい。
で、この３万羽の鳥達。不憫なものである。人に食われるために生まれてきて、インフルだからと食われもせぬまま殺されて。僕は今、新作をひねり出すのに七転八倒している。過酷である。好きではじめたこととはゆえ、期日が迫ると客観的になど到底なれず自分がとても不憫になる。人ごとなら「お前の本が出来ようと出来まいと、地球はしずしずと太陽の回りをまわってゆくのだよ」と涼しい事を言う僕でもつらい。
が、あの鳥らに比べたらまだましなのである。
宇宙服のような装備の人らに鷲づかみにされて、さぞつらかったろう怖かったろう。しかしあの鳥らはそうして死んでゆくことで世界中の子供と僕を慰めているのである。ジーザス・クライストなのである。
鳥の死は、けして無駄ではない。
