　夏休みだからとゆって、どこかへ旅行に連れて行ってもらうでもなく、ただぼんやり宿題もせず涼しいところで過ごすだけの子供だったぼくに「夏休みなのにもったいない」とあきれながら意見をした同級生がいた。

　「それじゃあ」と、その同級生の夏休みの過ごし方を聞いてみると、きちんとコマメに日割りして予定をたてラジオ体操へゆき宿題を片付け、絵日記を描いて書き、田舎のおばあちゃんのところへゆき虫をとり川で泳ぎ、花火大会に出かけカブスカウトの活動にも顔を出し、とまあたしかに学校へ行っているときよりも忙しい日々を送っていた。

　以来、夏休みのたびにその事を思い出し、貴重な夏休みを無駄に過ごしているのではないかという思いにさいなまれ続け、いまだに、本当にたまにだけれども旅行などへ行くと「旅行へ来ているのだ。もっと楽しまねばもったいないもっと」という内なる声に背中を激しくおされて、お腹も空いてないのに無理して景色を見ながら「駅弁」を食べ、睡眠時間もそこそこにどうってことのない観光名所などへ足を運び、挙げ句にぐったりとしてしまう。そしてその呪縛は旅行だけではない、調子の悪い日など何ごとにつけ「もったいない」もしくは「無駄に時間を過ごしてはならぬ」という考え方がぼくを責め立てる。ま、仕事をしているのかしていないのか、わからぬような仕事をしているからなおのことであるのだけれども。

　が、そうして責め立てられながらも「しかし」と思う。たしかに「短い人生、無駄に過ごすべきではない」と言われれば、深く考えもせずに「そうね」とうなずいてしまいそうになるけれども、果たしてそうなのか、と。

　「水の中で１週間」のこの人のニュースをいくつかテレビで見たけれど、だいたいにおいて「無駄で無意味」と、うすら笑われていた。生きて終えたからよかったものの、もしあれで死んでいたら「無駄で無意味なもったいないことをして死んだ人」と、たぶん小声で言われたのだろう。

　とにかく「無意味」「無駄」はゆるされないらしい。万人に理解される「意味」がなければならないらしい。三年寝太郎も最後は活躍するからこそ「無駄じゃなかった」と許されるのであって、ただ寝ているだけでは、ただ「もったいない」だけの人生を過ごしたタワケ者という事になり、ゆるされない。

　しかし。そもそも、人の行為に、ひいては人の人生に対して「意味」があるのかないのか「もったいない」か「無駄」かどうかを誰が判定するのか。全員１回しか過ごせぬ人生ではないか(生まれ変わりとかそういう系の考え方はこの際はぶくけれども)。１回ずつの者同士が、それもまだ誰も全うしていない者同士が(全うしたということは死んでいるということですからね)、何をどう判定して「意味」があるとかないとか「無駄」とかどうとか言うのか。しょせん初心者同士ではないか。

　１週間水の中にいると全身の皮膚がかぶれるのだそう。そんなに「無駄」や「もったいない」のがいやで「意味」がほしけりゃ、それを聞いて「へえ」と驚いていればいい。あの人が死ぬ思いをしてあらためて確認されたことなのであるから。

このニュースは山下さんじゃなくても取り上げそうなネタだから敢えて山下さんには取り上げて欲しくなかったよ。
無駄とかもったいないとか言ってる人も２４時間意味あることだけし続けたら死ぬよねきっと。

日本のメディアでの扱い方が、「無駄で無意味」と言っていたとしたら、それは
日本での彼の知名度のせいではないかしら。
私の周りでも、「マジックだけでは生活できないので、名前を売る為ではないか」
とか、「彼は、頭がどこか変なのではないか」なんて言っている人もいましたもん。

でも彼って、伝説のマジシャン：フーディーニ（こんな感じの名前）の再来と
言われているアメリカでも有名なマジシャン。年収が６，７億だったかしら？
デカプリオをはじめ、色々なハリウッドスターなんかとも知己の仲。
私が見た時のニュースでは、リンカーンセンター前に、ハリウッドスターの
ダスティ・ホフマン氏が、わざわざ激励に訪れたというニュースを伝えていました。
ダスティ・ホフマン氏は、取材中のＴＶのレポーターに、粋なコメントを残して去って行きました。
なあるほど、日本とアメリカでは、其々の受け取り方に温度差があるのねえ。

でもでも、２０００年前後頃？、このマジシャンの（１週間土の中に生き埋め）や、（何十日も氷付け）等のニュースの時は、その行為を「無駄で無意味」と言うより、その行為に「吃驚」しただったかなあ。

命がけで、「無駄で無意味」を立証している。
そこに理由を求めても「無駄で無意味」なのだから、考えるだけ時間がモッタイナイ。
しかし、「命がけ」であることで何やら有り難味をかもし出している。

彼にとっては、マジックの延長にあるのではないか。
手品で周囲を驚かせること、それ自体「無駄で無意味」なのだから。
そこにこれほど「命がけ」になれるのだから、やはり一流なのもうなずける。

とすると、「芝居」もマジックの類に入るのではないだろうか。
是非「命がけ」で、「無駄で無意味」だけれどなぜか「感動」みたいな芝居を期待していますよ。
