遺言
【北京/中国 28日 AFP】年間1兆7000億本のタバコを消費する3億5000万人の喫煙者がいる中国では、多くの若者や都会に住む女性たちが、喫煙をファッションとしてだけではなく、男らしく、生活に必須な社交的手段として捉えている。欧米では禁煙運動家たちが公共の場でのタバコを標的にしているが、中国ではタバコ市場の重要性が高まりつつある。写真は28日、北京（Beijing）の通りでタバコを吸う男性。(c)AFP/Frederic J. BROWN
この写真にはあからさまな「意図」がある。塩のふいた野球帽をあみだにかぶった労務者風以外にも、もっと他にたくさんいたはずである。タバコを吸っている人
は。なのにわざと写真家はこの労務者風を選んでいる。書けば書くほど「お宅、労務者風に何か良からぬ感情をお持ちなのでは？これ普通の写真ですけど？」と言うことも出来る返し技が含まれてすらいるところも、またにくい。
「意図」はあからさまであればあるほど威力を発揮する。「この労務者風に失礼なんじゃないか」「そういう意図なのなら、もっとお金持ち風の紳士淑女がタバコをくわえている写真でもいいんじゃないか」とかいう腰の引けた考え方では「意図」は相手に通じない。
世界はタバコをやめさせたいのである。どんな複雑な狙いがその根底にあるにせよ。だから「意図」を込めた写真はこれくらいでないと意味がない。よその国のタバコのパッケージにはニコチンでドロドロになった肺の写真を載せているという。幼い子供が血まみれで何人も横たわるそのそはで、うまそうにタバコをくわえる変態極悪人の写真とか、ウンコとか死体とかが浮いているガスの湧く沼に浮かんだたくさんの吸い殻とかの写真とかが載りはじめてもぼくは驚かない。そんな「なまはげ」的な手法こそが「意図」を伝えるのだから。
ちなみにぼくはタバコを吸う。
だからとゆって、今のこの「世界的嫌煙時代」にとやかく言う気もなければ興味もない。「受動喫煙の害」を叫ぶ人が排気ガスをまき散らせて車内禁煙で走り回っていたとしても、ま、どうでもいい。「タバコは体に悪いよぉ？」と肝臓壊して顔色真っ黒けの酔っぱらいにからまれたとしても、ま、いい。この一連のブーム(ブームじゃないか。啓蒙か。ま、何でもいい)のおかげで携帯灰皿を持つようになったし、なるべく灰皿のある場所で吸うようになった。
「やめた方がいいですよ」とたくさんの人が言う。どれだけタバコが体に悪いか取り憑かれたように説く人もいる。ぼくは何もタバコが体に「良い」と思っているわけではない。あれだけ世界が言うのだから、まあ悪いのだろうと思う。
それでもぼくは吸う。「気持ちが安らぐ」だとか「社交のために」だとか「書いてるときにはタバコがね、いいんですよ」などとわかったような屁理屈などつけずに、吸う。意味なく、吸う。なるべくご迷惑にはならぬようにしようとは思うけれど、よってたかって「悪いよ？体に悪いよ？」と言われれば言われるほどぼくは、吸う。それでもし寿命が縮まるのなら、それでもいい。世界が右を向くのなら左へ向いて、世界が左へ向くのなら右に向いて吸う。上を向いたら下を向いて、下を向いたら上を向いて、のぞきこまれたら顔をそむけてでも、吸う。
「正しい」とか「正しくない」の問題ではない。「大きな流れにはいちおう逆らっておけ」というのが、亡き父の遺言なのだから、仕方がない。

タバコを吸っている人と会うと
「最近吸う場所も限られて大変ですね～」
というような会話が必ず出てくる。
会話のネタ切れなんかの時には必ず…(笑)
今吸っている人は、結構なヘビースモーカーじゃないと
このご時世の流れに逆らう気力は無いのかもしれない。
それが遺言なら尚更か…(笑)
山下さんには、太く長く生きて頂きたい。
紫煙片手に頑張って下さい(*^_^*)
