一枚の写真から--マルセーユルーレット
傍らにはいつもボールがある。何よりもサッカーをしている時間が好きな小さな男の子をいつも公園で見かけていた。ただ懸命に、しかしそれは仕方のない時間潰しのようにも見えなくはなかった。
あまりにも熱中していている姿に、そしてあまりにも不憫に思えてしまう姿に、私は声をかけずにはいられなかった。
「いつもここでボール蹴ってるね？楽しいか？」
「・・・うん！」
すぐに痩せ我慢だとわかった。この子にはおそらく友達がいない。
「友達とは一緒にやらないのか？」
子供には少々きつい質問だったが、私には聞かなければならない理由があった。
【偶然】
両親は日本人。見た目も国籍も、ナショナリズムも全てmade in Japanな私が両親の気まぐれで米国に引っ越したのは小学校１年生の頃だった。ちょうど今の時期で、学校生活にも慣れ、友達だってかなり出来ていた矢先、
「来週からアメリカに引っ越すわよ。お父さんが永住権当たったんですって。」
覚えているのは母親の上ずった声だけ。“エイジュウ拳”なんていう必殺技はどのゲームでも聞いたことがなかった。
すぐに母親に連れられて学校に転校の挨拶に向かった。クラスメートにも突然のお別れを告げ、時間が無かったにも関わらずサヨナラ会を開いてくれた皆に子供ながらに精一杯の感謝の意を示した。
そこから私の人生は不安定なものに変わった。
【違うということ】
最初にアメリカに引っ越してから、日本の大学に入学した18歳までの間、都合６度の引越しを繰り返した。アメリカからイギリス。イギリスからドイツ。ドイツから日本。日本からアメリカ。アメリカ国内での引越し（ワシントン州→ニューヨーク州）。そしてアメリカから日本。この間ほど、自分が何人であるのか？という疑問を繰り返し自問自答していた時期はない。どこに行っても地に足が着いていない状態。どの国にいっても、「あいつアメリカから来たんだって。」、「ドイツに住んでたらしいよ、ダンケシェーン。」。こんな類いの憎まれ口を子供はよそ者に対して言い放つ。“お客さん”扱いしかされなかった。日本に戻った時も、もう同じ日本人としては見られなかった。
自分が来たくてここにいるわけじゃない。それなのになんで皆自分たちと違う肌の色、顔立ちっていうだけでここまで言われないといけないの？？
両親に怒りをぶつけたことは一度だけではなかった。必然と一人遊びに夢中になった。ずっと壁とキャッチボールしていたこともあった。
【ジズー】
この男の子は、明らかにヨーロッパ系の血が入っている顔立ちをしている。私と同じように、もしくはそれ以上に自分と他の子供とでは何がそんなに違うの？と考えているかもしれない。
「自分以外の人に敬意を払っていれば、必ず人々は自分にも敬意を払ってくれるようになる。」
ドイツW杯で現役代表を退くアルジェリア系移民、ジネディーヌ・ジダンの父親は息子にそう言って聞かせたという。
「いいかい。好きなこと、自分が楽しいと思うことは、絶対に止めちゃダメだよ。またおじさんとサッカーしような。」
恥ずかしながら目を潤ませ、この子にそう言った。すると子供は、不思議そうな感じに「・・・うん、いいよ。」と、弱冠首を傾げてからそう言った。
ボールを子供に返し、その場から立ち去ろうとした時、
「ごめーん、遅れた！」
「おせぇ～なぁ。早くやろうぜ！！」
この子と同じ歳くらいの子供５人が自転車をすっ飛ばして公園にやってきた。この子にはサッカーを一緒にやる友達がいたんだ。
勝手な憶測で自分とダブらせて、友達がいないと決め付けた自分の早合点に恥ずかしくなり顔を赤らめた。
【理想ダディー】
自分にもし子供が生まれたらこう言ってやろう。
「一芸に秀でることと、人に敬意を払うこと、この二つだけは忘れるな。」と。
