一枚の写真から--用の美

日本建築、made in Japanを体現する言葉。「用の美」。優れた実用性の中にこそ存在する美意識。最近ではあまり見られなくなった日本の伝統的職人芸を表すこの「用の美」を、日常でも追求している男がいる。
豆腐職人、秋田恒夫である。
父からの代の店を任されてから、まだ３年しか経っていない。中学を卒業と同時にこの世界に入った。元々手先が器用では無かったし、要領だって良いとは言えなかった。だが仕事を選ぶことが当たり前のこの時代、自分の好きな事をする為なら家業であろうが躊躇無く自らの道を切り拓く若者が多い中、恒夫は豆腐屋になると小さな頃から思い、それだけの為に時間を割いた。
「用の美」という言葉を知ったのはつい最近のこと。物作りならば余分な物は要らない。直線的であるべき。この考えは豆腐を作るようになってから強くなっていた。そして、恒夫にとっての「用の美」は、普段の生活の中にまで浸透していた。
【シャーパー】
16歳からこの道に入って丸6年。周りの友人達は大学生や専門学校生ばかり。バイトや親の金で好き放題遊んでいる。恒夫にも遊びの誘いは来るものの、豆腐屋の朝は早い。一度朝まで飲んで、寝ずに仕事に取り掛かったことがあったが、その時の豆腐の味が普段と違うと文句を言われた。料理人とまではいかないにしろ、豆腐屋にとっても舌は大事な商売道具。体調管理の徹底の為、それからは夜を徹しての遊びは止めた。要らないものは削る。「用の美」は、恒夫の中では全てにかかる。
【バカさ故】
恒夫には、好いている女がいた。これまでだって色んな人を好きになった。けど、恒夫にとっての「用の美」が恋の行く手を阻んだ。余分な言葉は要らない。一目惚れした相手には『好きです。付き合ってください』と、まだ互いの名前も年齢もわからない内から気持ちをありのまま伝え、友人関係から突然好意を持ったときも『俺達付き合いだして、まだ１週間だよな。』と、自分が一方的に好きになった日から自分たちは付き合い出しているというとんでもない勘違いをしたこともあった。恒夫は不器用で、直線的で過ぎるがために歪んでいる。
今好きな相手は、豆腐を毎日買いに来る常連客だった。徐々に会話もするようになり、その女が鉄を素材に創作活動をしている芸術家だということを知った。
【リー】
物を作るということ、こだわるというところから親近感を互いに持つようになった。ある時女が見せてくれた、現在制作途中の鋼鉄のブルース・リー像の写真。
『薬物依存だったとか、テコンドーとの立会いに負けたとか、色々諸説はあるけど、この人程に無駄な筋肉や脂肪をそぎ落として、本当に闘う為だけの身体作りをした人っていないんじゃないかな。ちょっと違うかもしれないけれど、「用の美」ってやつかもね。』
【美意識】これまでの恒夫なら、この時点で交際を一方的に申し込んでいたのかもしれない。実用性が伴わなかったこれまでの告白。無駄な言葉は要らない。そのまま伝えれば良い。しかし、過去の体験で、言葉の実用性には無駄が付きまとうということを感じている。
取り留めのない話で会話が成り立つことが、言葉の持つ実用性なのではないか？
『今度、アトリエに遊びに行ってもいいかな？』
豆腐を水の中で切るように、スッと恒夫の口から出た言葉に、ようやく実用性が表れた瞬間だった。言葉を拾う際には、ちょっとした心配りが必要。
恒夫の「用の美」に、一つ新たな事柄が加わった。
