中田という人
中田英寿が引退を表明した。今となってはこの写真、「さようなら」という言葉が聞こえてきそうだ。彼のオフィシャルホームページには、“人生とは旅であり、旅とは人生である”と記されている。彼にとっての旅とはどんなものだったのだろう。
彼の出身は山梨県で、県内の韮崎高校を卒業している。高校のホームページを見てみた。伝統のある県立高校で、校庭の巨大なモニュメントが目を引く。丁度中田が入学したころ設置されたようで、一対の若い男女の像で、男性は人工的な翼を背負い身構えている。女性は鳥を飛び立たせようとしている。象徴は「翼」である。題名はずばり「旅立ち」だ。
彼にとって旅のイメージの原点は、ここにあるのかも知れない。サッカー少年であった中田にとって、「翼」とはもちろんサッカーであるけれども、高校時代からイタリア語を学んでいた逸話も知られている。つまり語学も「翼」である。この象の青年は遠くをしっかりと見据えているが、彼の場合、はっきりと「イタリア」が見えていたと考えると、恐るべき少年と言わざるを得ない。さすがだ。
今回のオフィシャルホームページに残された言葉には、言葉にできないもどかしさを感じるところがある。日本代表は個人のレベルは高いが、自分たちの実力を100％出す術を知らなかったこと、それを伝えようとしたが最後まで上手に伝えることができなかったことを残念に思っている点だ。言葉にできないサッカーの極意のようなものが彼には“見えて”いたが、複数の言語を使うことのできる語学の達人であっても、伝えることができなかったというわけか。日本代表主将宮本恒靖が中田の引退に際して、「ハーフタイムの文句が聞けないのは寂しい」と語っているが、他の選手には「文句」であっても、中田なりの真剣なコミュニケーションの手段だったのだろう。
そういえば自身の発言と報道をめぐるマスコミとの軋轢などがあったが、一方ではスポーツ選手ホームページの先駆けとなったのも彼のサイトである。正確な情報伝達を常に気遣う姿勢は一貫している。
素人でも分かりやすい一例は、たぶん有名なキラーパスではなかろうか。パスというのは相手あってのパスだ。しかし敵に予測されてはあまり意味がない。素人として物理的なボールの行方にばかり目が行っていたけれども、中田のことを考えていると、フィールドが見えない情報戦の場のようにも見えてきた。
ところで、中田の旅はどこに向かうのだろう。中田に“見えて”いるのかどうかも分からないが、心の羅針盤が指し示す方向はきっとあるに違いない。人生という旅はそういうものだと思う。
