クリスマス早朝、突然のニュースが走った！

１２月２５日、クリスマスの早朝、少し前に東京から
帰ってきて 、夜中CNNのTV放映をみていたのだが、
ソウル ミュージックの神様、ジェームス ブラウンが肺炎と
関連する合併症で、ジョージア州アトランタ市の病院で
突然亡くなったニュースが飛び込んできた、
私は、年明けの一月４、５日に放送する NHKの
FM ラジオの特別番組の仕事の為に、１２月の半ばから、
東京に滞在していて、丁度この夜NYに戻ってきたばかり。
ジェームス ブラウンは、今週末、ニュージャージーでの
コンサートや、ニューヨークのタイムズ スクエアーで、
大晦日のカウント ダウン、NBC TVや、CNNの特別TV番組
などへの出演が予定されていたのがだ、突然の事で本当に驚いた。
彼の代表曲には、日本でも有名なセックスマシーン、
プリーズ プリーズ、パパ ゴット ア ブランド ニュー
カーなど、があり、全米のヒット チャートには１２０曲以上が
記録され、アメリカのロック ミュージツクの殿堂では、
歴代、BEST 50 Musicianの一人に選ばれている。
この突然の知らせを聞いて、彼と会ったときの
事を色々思い出していた。
私はこのソウル界のゴッドファーザーとは、
仕事関係を含めて過去何度かあった事がある。
今年になって、NHKの衛星放送で、
彼のライブコンサートを紹介する番組も手がけた。
この突然の知らせを聞いて、彼と会ったときの
事を色々思い出していた。
最初にあったのは、NYで２０年以上前になる。
当時、ジェームス ブラウンのシングル曲
リビング イン ザ アメリカが８５年に公開された、
ロッキー４の映画のテーマ曲となって大ヒットし
彼は、全米を含めての大掛かりなコンサートツアー
を始めていた。
その頃、私はニューヨークの大型クラブ、パラディアム
-,Palladium-で、色々なイベントをプロデュースしていた。
このパラディアムの経営は、スタジオ５４のオーナーだった
スティーブ ロベルと現在はホテル経営で成功している
イアン シュレイガー, デザインは日本の磯崎新、
６０００人ほど収容できるマルチフロアーの
クラブだった。
ロッキー４の 映画で、ソビエトからのボクサーとして
出演した、ドルフ、ラングレン をVIPゲストに迎えて、
ジェームス ブラウンの公演を計画したのだ。
当日は、マンハッタンの社交界や、映画界、
音楽業界などの、多くの関係者を招待した。
ドルフの、当時の奥さんで、ジャマイカ出身の
シンガー及びモデルのグレース ジョーンズも
パーティに来てくれた。
パラディアムの大ホールにステージを設置した、
ジェームス ブラウンの公演は、一般の人が見られるように
チケットを発売した。 ただ、事前には、どれくらい
人が入るのか、全く予測がつかなかったので、不安があった。
当日、ふたを開けてみると色々な憶測に反して、
パラディアムは大入り満員となった
私は、コンサートのステージ横や上の階でのパーティと
うれしい悲鳴 を上げながら、汗だくになって
忙しく動き回っていた。
コンサートあと、楽屋でマネジャーを探していたら、
突然、ジェームスの付き人から、呼ばれた。
ジェームス ブラウンのライブは、素晴らしく
アンコールを叫ぶ声が絶えず、大成功となった。
コンサートあと、ギャラの半金を払う予定だったので、
楽屋に小切手を持っていき、マネジャーを探していたら、
突然、彼の付き人から、呼ばれた。
楽屋に設置された、特別控え室のソファーには、
ギラギラした目をしたジェームスが、ソファー
に座って汗を拭いていた。
私が挨拶をするなり、早口でしゃべり始めたのだ。
アクセントが強く、最初聞き取りにくかったが
矢継ぎ早に、半金は現金で俺に払えと伝えられた。
マネジャーや、ブッキング エージェントを押しのけた
プロモーターとアーティスト直の話である。
”俺がジェームブラウンだ、俺が全て決める”
事前にエージェントと交わした公演の契約には
マネジャーに小切手を渡す事になっていると
説明すると、彼は、”俺がジェームブラウンだ、
俺が全て決める” ”現金に換えて支払え”と言った。
独特のだみ声で、言葉には説得力があった。
直ぐにクラブのキャッシャーを呼び寄せて、
ジームスに渡す為に、現金に換えさせて、彼に
手渡ししたのだ。
取りあえず、その場で、手書きの文面を用意して、
手殴りのサインをもらい、握手をした。
彼は、封筒に入った沢山の現金を
自分の懐に入れると、控え室の奥に消えていった。
彼がテーブルで振り向いたとき、目線があったので
軽く挨拶をしたら、私に気がついてくれた。
その後、随分あとになってから、
NYで開かれた、ソング ホール オブ フェーム、
(Song Hall Of Fame )と呼べばれる、音楽会のイベント
でも彼に会った。
このイベントのゲストとして呼ばれたジェームス ブラウン
は、ステージ同様の黒いスーツを着て、金髪の女性同伴で
来ていた。 彼の周りにはセキョリティや付き人が何人もいて
物々しい雰囲気が漂っていた。
私は、友人のプロデューサーと近くの丸いテーブルに
座っていた。 彼が振り向いたとき、目線があったので
軽く挨拶をしたら、私に気がついてくれた。
ジェームスブラウンは、生まれたときから、記憶力が
大変素晴らしく、一度会って仕事をした人は忘れないと
以前話していたのを思い出した。
その夜の彼の印象は、以前会ったときと同じように
野性的で、ギラギラ目を光らせていた、鋭い視線が、
まるで 心の底を見抜いているようで、目線が会うと、
妙に照れくさく感じたのだ。
２０００年に日本の夏のコンサートイベントのゲストに
来ていた時、大阪公演の楽屋で再会したのが昨日のようだ。
今年のカウントダウンは、久しぶりのNYでのステージで、
大変楽しみにしていたのだが、、、
また、一人素晴らしい人を無くしてしまったようだ、
